Like Wells Branch we just supply office space and tutoring space for our
local volunteer Literacy Council. However, since I'm on their board, I
can tell you that they use textbooks and teacher's manuals purchased
from New Reader's Press. Also, they are affiliated with Pro-Literacy
America which has a lot of useful information. Also, there is supposedly
(haven't looked at it myself) a lot of information and self-tutorials
for literacy tutors on the Verizon website.

Hope some of that helps!

Wells Branch is partnered with ACC who conducts the classes. All we
supply is the rooms for them. They do the registration and supply the
instructors.

Shanda,

Here are some resources that might be useful:

The National Center for the Study of Adult Learning had some free
teaching materials (like "Understanding What Reading is All About" that
has 13 lessons for adult learners at the 0-6th grade reading level)
available in pdf format: http://www.ncsall.net/?id=35

ALA has some recommended links to curriculum resources, though some of
them seem irrelevant to adult literacy:

http://www.ala.org/ala/olos/outreachresource/servicesnewnonreaders.htm#c
urriculum

This link: http://www.nifl.gov/readingprofiles/ provides assessment
strategy tool for adult learners. This tool gives you suggestions for
curriculum based on what profile the learner matches.
Here are a list of resources from the NIFL:
http://www.nifl.gov/readingprofiles/resources.htm

But this doesn't answer the question that you asked: what materials are
our member libraries using for literacy programs?

Thanks,
Kam

Hello all,

We are thinking of implementing an adult literacy program, but do not
want to re-invent the wheel. We would really appreciate any information
on programs (curricula, etc.) that are successful in other libraries.
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!
