Thanks, Linda, for the thoughtful reply with all the historical information about the company mergers. If a corporation is "on the state contract list," your library will get the best pricing possible.
For those of you who wanted to know about re-binding for patrons who need an old family bible or other similar book rebound, the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas has a list of book conservators on their website: www.hrc.utexas.edu/conservation/resources/directory Laurie Laurie Mahaffey, Deputy Director Central Texas Library System, Inc. 1005 West 41st Street Austin, Texas 78756 www.ctls.net [email protected] 512-583-0704 x18 800-262-4431 x18 ________________________________ From: Linda Howell [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, June 07, 2010 12:15 PM To: Laurie Mahaffey; [email protected] Subject: RE: [ctls-l] FW: Bindery Houchen Bindery www.houchenbindery.com/ out of Nebraska bought Library Binding and will be transferring their database. We have used Houchen for some materials, but not Genealogy. I am expecting to meet with their sales rep, about our expectations and criteria for our Genealogy materials. Houchen is a fairly large company having bought Everett out of Louisiana a few years ago. They also bought Empire Binding/Wichita Falls in 2005. Our biggest issue was when they were merging with Everett, and using different terminology in the process. We got samples made of the different procedures they used & I met with Damon Osborne, President, and had most of our problems resolved. Houchen is on the Texas State Contract list. Most of the processes they use are mechanical, where as Library Binding in Waco, still did a lot of work by hand, thus the high quality & pricing. Their trimming and blocking of spines is not the greatest, so I am hesitant about sending some of our Genealogy, until after I meet with a rep. Houchen makes monthly pick-ups and deliveries, throughout Texas. The next scheduled is week of June 21 for our area.
