The library is a member of the Chamber as a City department. I don't really do much with them though. I am active as a member of Rotary and Altrusa (a women's service organization). I have been President of the Rotary Club, and am currently President of the Altrusa Club. I am also a member of the City Federated Women's Club so I hit all the different demographics! The library has received donations from all these organizations, but I'm not sure it's due to my membership. I would say the main advantage to the library is it raises the profile of the library, and allows me to associate with professionals in the community. Last night I was out with some of the Altrusans, and a Rotarian came in to the place we were and was being introduced around. He said "of course I know Judy, she's the quiet person everyone knows"--I decided to take that as a compliment!
By the way, my boss (Assistant City Manager) has given me high marks on my evaluation for my community involvement. So, I think if your City values that, you will find it worth it professionally. On a personal level, I feel good about contributing to the community and on an international basis. My City does not pay for my memberships in any of these organizations, but my bosses are fairly easy on my spending work time on service projects. Hope this helps! Rotary Club? Something similar? If so, can you tell me about the benefits to the library of joining/membership? Thanks, Donita
