An Ancient Mystery Solved?

You will have come here for anyone of number of reasons, but this site
exists for only one - to discover the means by which Johann Bessler
utilized the earth’s gravitational field in his so-called ‘perpetual
motion machine’ in the year 1712 - and ultimately provide a solution to
the energy crisis.
The question mark at the end of the title indicates that the discovery
process is all but done, there remains one small query to solve and then
we shall have the solution - I hope!

My book -’Perpetual Motion - An Ancient Mystery Solved?’ contains all
the evidence which I have accumulated over a number of years. This book
is now available through this site.

To counter accusations that this is a scam or that I am ‘three bricks
short of a load’ or that I am an eccentric trying to promote some
strange philosophy, I have provided in these pages facts and arguments
extracted from my book. These will, I hope, go some way towards
ameliorating such thoughts.

I have set out firstly to prove that Johann Bessler was not a fraud, and
secondly to prove that his machine did not contradict nor debase current
scientific theory and practice and the laws which govern them. The
arguments are persuasive and I believe that an unprejudiced reading of
them will arouse in most people a feeling that History has wrongly
convicted an innocent man.

As for my credentials - I have worked within the engineering industry
for over thirty years in various capacities. I have studied the subject
of Johann Bessler for most of that time, firstly as a hobby but latterly
in a more ordered way. I felt compelled to unearth everything I possibly
could about him because of the slowly dawning realisation that he was
sincere and therefore there had to be some explanation for the success
of his machine. Since advertising on the internet I have been amazed to
discover that all around the world there are people who have
independently arrived at the same decision as I have - that Bessler was
genuine - and who have been working on their own theories as to how he
achieved the results that he did.

I hope that this book will be of value to those mentioned above and also
to others who perhaps are unaware of this man’s life, but who
nevertheless would like to see a solution to the energy problems that
beset us at the end of this millennium.

An Ancient Mystery Solved?

•Is a solution to the energy crisis imminent? An alternative energy?
•Is there an inexaustable supply of free energy waiting to be tapped?
•Is this new energy?
•Is a 90% fall in the consumption of the earth’s natural resources
possible?
•Is a 90% decrease in pollution achievable?
•Is there an alternative to solar energy, wind energy and tidal energy?
•Is there an alternative to nuclear energy or the burning of fossil
fuels?
•Did an 18th century inventor discover a new way of generating power?
•Are there any conditions under which perpetual motion might be
possible?

YES!

A new investigation into the legend of Bessler’s wheel

On the 6th June, 1712 Johann Bessler announced to the world that he had
discovered the secret of perpetual motion and had constructed a machine
which demonstrated his claim. For many reasons this claim has been put
aside and the originator of it has been consigned to the dustbins of
history along with all the other frauds, fabulists and fakers whose
lives occupy the archives of many a dusty shelf in museums throughout
the world.

The reasons for this fact are not hard to find. For a start Perpetual
Motion is regarded as impossible. Science does not acknowledge the
possibility of designing a machine which will acquire sufficient energy
of itself, to drive other machines, without accessing that energy from
outside itself - and neither do I.

However. . . the first time I read an account of the legend of Bessler’s
wheel I noticed a glaring error, one that should have been obvious to
anyone who read the account closely. And there was not just one area of
concern, as I began to study the story I realised that there were
several inconsistencies. These led me on an investigation that has
occupied me for several years, and has taken me to archives in the UK,
Germany and Russia. Despite the fact that I was unable to speak or
understand these languages, I was so convinced that I had stumbled on
something of tremendous importance, that I paid to have these various
texts translated, with the outcome that this is probably the fullest
account of Bessler’s life that has been written to date. There is one
simple fact to be taken into consideration at this point. My
investigations enable me to state unequivocally, that it would not be
possible to recreate a similar machine today, using 18th century
technology and submitting it to the same tests and examinations that the
original machine underwent and expect it to pass - unless it utilized so
me unrecognised principle of physics in its design. I speak, not as an
academic, but as an engineer of some thirty years experience at the
sharp end of mechanical engineering. In addition there are known and
established facts which contradict the impression that the inventor was
a liar and a fraudster - facts which have been available to the public
for more than two hundred and fifty years, but which have been ignored.

The above book is the culmination of over ten years research. It has
become necessary to publish my findings for two reasons. One is that I
have reached a point where I can get no further in my search for the
secret of Johann Bessler’s success, and therefore need to lay out my
reasons for believing that he was sincere, and my hypothesis which
describes how he succeeded. In doing this I am well aware that this may
lead to some other person discovering the secret, and I would in fact
welcome this, should it occur. The earth and its inhabitants are
approaching a crisis. New forms of energy are being constantly sought,
but none of them offer the simplicity of the Bessler machine. There are
drawbacks to all of the areas of energy generation currently being
researched. Bessler’s machine would create no pollution, it would
conserve earth’s resources, and it would be so low-tech that it would be
cheaply available to even the poorest country - and most importantly of
all, it is free energy.

The other reason for publishing this book is this. On at least two
occasions Bessler mentions that if he doesn’t sell his machine then he
would be content to take the secret to his grave, but then he drops
hints that the secret would not be lost for ever as he has left clues in
various places which would enable someone with an acute mind to decipher
the clues and build his own version of the Bessler machine. My
familiarity with his works has allowed me to identify three places which
hold encoded information and several places where he points to this
information. I have tried to decipher the code but cryptology is not
something for which I have a talent. It would be a mistake for me to
hold on to this information when someone else might well be able to
decipher it, and release the means to solve the energy crisis. I have
therefore included in the book all the evidence for a code, the actual
codes themselves and my findings concerning them so far.

My book has been offered to many UK publishers and there has been some
interest from some, but the consensus is that I am pushing for the
acceptance of the theory of perpetual motion as a means of solving the
world’s energy crisis, and therefore none dare associate themselves with
my ideas. Despite repeated denials of this fact, it remains the received
opinion among publishers and academics. I would like my book to become
the focus of discussion concerning development of a new source of energy
generation for the next century; an energy based on Bessler’s machine.
To further this aim I have decided to self-publish because I am
convinced of the reality of the Bessler machine and its potential
beneficial impact on sources of energy and pollution.

There are only two questions to consider:

1) Is there sufficient evidence to conclude that Bessler was genuine?

2) Are my arguments for the acceptance of my proposition, reasonable,
logical and based on common sense?

Johann Bessler’s wheel

•It measured twelve feet (four meters) in diameter
•It was eighteen inches (half a meter) in thickness
•It weighed in excess of 700 pounds (320 Kilos)
•Each second, four massive 24 pound (10 kilo) weights crashed against
the side of the machine
•It turned at a speed of twenty-six turns a minute
•It was locked and sealed and placed under guard and left to run for
eight weeks
•The inventor asked £20.000 for the secret - more than £1.500,000 or
$2,500,000 today

How do we know Bessler was genuine?

First we must look at the accusation that he was a criminal. History has
assigned this task to his maid, who swore on oath that he had turned the
machine from an adjoining room. She claims that a thin bar of barbed
metal was secreted inside one of the supports of the wheel, and this
acted on the bearings of the machine. This secret mechanism was operated
from the adjoining room, which was Bessler’s bedroom by a small handle.
This piece of evidence has been quoted time after time as the most
damning piece of evidence against Bessler, never mind the fact that
perpetual motion is impossible.

This was the first thing that caught my eye at the age of fifteen! The
wheel in question, measured twelve feet in diameter, eighteen inches in
thickness, and weighed almost seven hundred pounds, and yet we are asked
to believe that this mighty construction which turned on bearings of
just three-quarters of an inch, was driven - through those bearings
-with sufficient force to turn it at twenty-six revolutions per minute,
and lift a weight of seventy pounds from the castle yard to the roof, or
alternatively to turn an archimedes screw for pumping water. As if that
was not enough, the machine was locked into a sealed and guarded room
and allowed to turn non-stop for fifty-four days, nearly two months!

The maid goes on to say that during this extended eight week test the
machine was operated by just four people and that they did this
twenty-four hours a day! This means that each person had to turn the
wheel for at least six hours a day without stopping.

I knew at the time that the maid was wrong about the mechanism, you
couldn’t even make the wheel move if you had to apply force through the
bearings! To believe that anyone would be able to operate a mechanism
for six hours a day for two months without rest beggars belief, always
asuming you could actually turn the thing. Further investigation
convinced me that she was part of a conspiracy involving the people that
the inventor constantly referred to as his ‘enemies’. We know who they
were and they had good reasons for trying to discredit Bessler. The
maid’s affidavit, on closer examination is clearly a record of a
question and answer session. It is easy reading between the lines to see
that she was being closely questioned by an official, following
accusations that she made. The answers are responses to questions, and
it is clear that she made some of them up as she went along. But this
affidavit has been produced time after time as evidence of Bessler’s
duplicity, and yet he was released without charge.

Another point in Bessler’s favour concerned his patron Karl, the
Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel. He took the inventor under his wing and
allowed him to construct a new machine and live as a guest at his
castle. This man insisted that before he accept Bessler and his machine,
he must be allowed to ascertain for himself whether the machine was
genuine. Bessler allowed him access to the machine and he satisfied
himself as to the validity of the inventor’s claims. He is quoted
several times as saying that the machine was so simple that he was
surprised that no one had ever discovered the secret before.

Now obviously there are only three possibilities to consider in Karl’s
case:

1) He was a party to a criminal deception, in which case we might as
well accept that Bessler was a fake;

2) He was taken in by a plausible rogue, and the same applies, or

3) The machine was genuine.

I have studied the history of the man, Karl, and the evidence is
presented in the book, but I can say now that the Landgrave of
Hesse-Cassel, was most warmly regarded by all the top scientists of the
day, men such as Gottfried Leibniz and Christian Wolff chose to
acknowledge his merit in numerous letters. Karl was a sponsor of Denis
Papin prior to Bessler’s arrival, and it was only the former’s decision
to move to England to be close to the Royal Society that ended their
partnership in some of the most epoch-making steam experiments ever
undertaken. France which was Papin’s country of origin still claim that
he invented the steam engine. The Landgrave was also famous for his
collection of the latest scientific instruments with all of which he was
thoroughly familiar.

But Karl was also well-regarded by all the leading powers in Northern
Europe as a steadfast ally in the many wars which took place at this
time. He was in constant conference with the Kings of England, Poland,
Prussia and Sweden and any hint that he might have been party to the
above suggested fraud, or that he had been taken in by it, would have
affected his high-standing among these powerful men. He negotiated at
high levels including attempting a settlement between Peter the Great of
Russia and King Charles XII of Sweden. He simply would not have risked
it.

When Karl came to power his country was poor, but he worked hard,
encouraged inward investment, provided a haven for the expelled
Hueguenots, developed industry and when he could afford it, engaged in
many large building projects including the digging of a canal to open up
the inland port of Karlshafen, and as a result, when he died he left his
country in excellent financial health.

Karl was aware of the maid’s accusations and merely commented that he
took no notice because he knew that the machine was genuine. He never,
in the following eighteen years up to his death, revealed the secret
because he had pledged to keep it secret until the inventor had received
just payment for his invention. It is simply impossible that Karl would
have connived in a fraud when there was no benefit to him either in
reputation, power or money. Equally it is extremely unlikely that he was
taken in by a fraudulent mechanism. There is so much evidence of his
intellectual ability that to suggest that gullibility was a trait of the
Landgrave’s is as crass as believing that he took part in a fraud that
would have had to include the Rulers of England, Russia, Poland and
Prussia.

There is much more evidence presented in the book, eyewitness accounts
by such men as Leibniz and Wolff who actively supported Johann Bessler;
actual descriptions of the many tests and examinations carried out on
the various machines; newspaper reports of the tests; letters written to
Bessler or about him by well-respected men of the time. All of this
evidence supports the conclusion that Bessler was not a fraud and that
he had built a machine which he honestly believed to be a perpetual
motion machine. The only outstanding evidence against him remains the
fact that perpetual motion is impossible. If it could be proved that
Bessler’s machine was not a perpetual motion machine, even though he
believed it to be so, then theoretically his machine is possible. In
fact this is exactly what I am proposing. His machine was what every one
meant by the words perpetual motion, but it was not such a thing
according to the precise definition of perpetual motion! The most
impressive piece of evidence which I shall present in the book is the
fact that Bessler’s machine is not impossible. I have constructed a
hypothesis which accounts for his success without overturning any
scientific or academic laws. The solution provides a reason for
Bessler’s success, and since all the other evidence that Bessler was a
fraud is firmly and decisively rejected it only remains for the reader
to accept that here is a solution to the energy crisis waiting to be
rescued from history.

Johann Bessler was so dismissive of his enemy’s attempts to undermine
his credibility that he reproduced one of their engravings in his
published booklet. It shows a tired looking servant hauling on a piece
of rope in an adjoining room. This alleged method of turning the wheel
was completely rejected by the many tests and examinations carried out
to detect just such a fraud.
