There has been a sea-change in the political situation in Russia during
December - a change that has been building up for some years. Whole
swathes of the Communist Party, including its leadership and its
President, Gennady Zyuganov, have blamed Jews for ruling Russia this
decade, for all Russia’s considerable problems today, and even for
attempting to exterminate all Russians. This is on the back of a failed
harvest and serious political, economic and financial crisis. This winter
the Russian masses face both starvation and freezing to death.
The Communist Party is the only genuine mass party across Russia and is
now recording over 50% in the polls. Yeltsin is down to 1% in the polls
and the rest of the pro-IMF centre-ground of Russian politics fares no
better. The IMF have now stopped all loans to Russia.
In order not to blame capitalism itself, in order to deflect blame from
themselves and from the Russian oligarchy, this blaming of Jews is now
accepted by the clear majority of Deputies in the Duma, which is dominated
by the CP. The CP leadership are politically now lining up with the ultra-
nationalists and open fascists - and abandoning any pretence at being
‘red’. In certain regions now, organised open fascist gangs are actually
paid to go on joint street patrols with the establishment police in both
ultra- nationalist and 'communist' controlled local governments. This
happened last in Germany after the 1933 Nazi takover.
The seriousness of the situation now warrants emergency action and the
building of an international solidarity organisation to raise financial,
technical and political support for all genuinely independent and
ant-racist workers and progressive organisations in Russia - who are sure
to come under vicious attack from many sides.
Solidarity is the life-blood of class struggle in these times. For
example; Krasnodar, the ‘Communist’ region in the south of Russia
mentioned earlier, has now officially printed anti-Jewish and anti-Turk
schoolbooks with ultra- nationalist teachings. Many schools during
December refused to distribute them. Where teachers’ local unions are
co-ordinating and supporting this work then we should organise to send
them immediate financial aid and solidarity. In such a case we should
turn to teachers unions everywhere, encourage twinning, etc. Donations
from an international solidarity network, with the present exchange rate
as it is, along with public solidarity messages, can do wonders for their
ability to fightback against reaction.
To guarantee the broadest possible practical support from the
international workers movement, we have to ensure that all those
organisations that we support in Russia are:
1. bona-fide progressive workers, community or ethnic organisations (ie,
not backed by the CIA, pro-market, the racist wings of the labour
movement, or ultra-nationalists),
2. and have a proven practical track record against racism and
anti-semitism.
All sections of the workers and labour movement, all anti-racists and
anti- fascists, socialists and sincere communists, must act in an
anti-sectarian manner and jointly launch a campaign for substantial
international solidarity.
Hitler once in power in 1933 said that his enemies should have squashed
his embryonic organisation in the 1920s. In his day there was a powerful
workers movement that could have done it. But they were divided. So we
urge all sisters and brothers, comrades and friends: join us in this fight
for a human world to live in - free from the terrors of dictatorship and
fascism.
We have accumulated a number of documents in recent days from various
sources that prove beyond all doubt the seriousness of the situation we
are describing. These can immediately be e-mailed to you if you request
them.
There is to be a planning meeting in London to set up a new international
solidarity organisation for this work.
It is on Wednesday 13th January at 7.30pm. Cock Tavern, Phoenix Rd, off
