I sometimes think that the self-proclaimed "conservatives" and "libertarians" actually want to repeal the last century, and go back to the "good old days" of the Robber Barons, cut-throat capitalism, and Jim Crow legislation... It's a funny thing: if you ask people whether they are "liberal", "moderate", or "conservative", most will say "moderate"; yet if you ask them what *programs* they support, most will include virtually all of the liberal programs enacted since the New Deal. My sister once commented that there's really no such thing as a "liberal" anyway--you're either reactionary or progressive. Count me as progressive, then.
