Clinton Impeached: Republican Coup D'Etat Nearly Complete
AND
Where Did These Lunatics Come From?

"Make no mistake, my colleagues, not all coups are accompanied by the sound
of marching boots and rolling tanks. Some, like today, are wrapped in a
constitutional veneer, softened by pious assertions of solemn obligation
and duty, but the result is the same: defiance of the public will and
rejection of the regular political process."

---Representative Nita Lowey, Democrat from New York, 1998

Not since the CIA's coup d'etat of November 22, 1963, when the men in
that organization murdered United States President John F. Kennedy, have we
seen anything like what just happened in Washington. The only difference
is that the coup of 1963 was bloody. This one, in December of 1998, is not
(so far).

Now granted, we do not yet know if this Republican-led coup will
ultimately remove the President from office entirely as the coup of 1963
did, or merely leave him seriously wounded politically. And this coup is
designed to kill the President's political life not his actual life
(although there are of course plenty of anti-Clinton zealots and fanatical
Republicans out there who would gladly kill the man himself if they could).

Nonetheless, we are dealing with an equally dangerous band of zealots
whose sole thought when they awake in the morning is "I hate Clinton. I
hate Clinton. I hate Clinton. I hate..." and whose last words at night
before bed continue the mantra: "I hate Clinton. I hate Clinton. I
hate..."

And, as you can imagine, it is awfully hard to get anything done when
your mind does nothing but repeat those three words all day. That explains
of course, why the Republican Congress has no major accomplishments in the
last six years, except for attacks on Bill Clinton.

It is an obsession on the part of the Republican party bordering on
dementia. And it is what makes the Trent Lotts and Dick Armeys and Henry
Hydes and Tom DeLays and Ken Starrs of Washington politics so dangerous.
Dangerous to democracy and dangerous to America.

These self-righteous fanatics would be labeled as the political
terrorists that they are and put behind bars for life as menaces to a free
society if they hadn't managed to first get elected to Congress. In
Congress, these nuts have been able to cloak themselves in an aura of
respectability that they do not deserve.

How did this horde of locusts ever get to Washington in the first
place? Most are Frankensteinian products of the Christian Coalition, an
organization with a frightening amount of money at its disposal and a very
successful grassroots program in place to get their pet monsters elected to
Congress. This is especially true of those in The House of
Representatives, who are elected from small Congressional districts, not
statewide, as Senators are. Therefore, it is easier to get a fanatic into
the House than the Senate.

This is why most of the coup planners are in the House, not the Senate,
and why the strongest invective, most personal attacks, and insidious
partisanship also are occurring mainly in the House. Once in the House,
these Freaks of Nature slithered into leadership positions, number one,
because the Republicans controlled the House and number two, because Gnewt
GetRich, their political idol, helped put them there. Gnewt GetRich named
the most rabid of these fanatical Clinton-haters lieutenants in his Army of
the Apocalypse.

This freaky band of Wingnuts has even cowed moderate Republicans into
voting their way on impeachment. This has been done by threatening the
moderate Republicans with the prospect of facing a Christian
Coalition-backed Republican opponent in the primaries of their next
Congressional election.

Of course, as one concerned citizen wrote in a letter to the editor of
The San Francisco Chronicle, the coup planners were also aided by other
Republicans, some moderate, who just wanted plain old revenge against
Clinton. Revenge because of his two electoral victories in two
Presidential elections, revenge because of the ousters of Nixon, Dole,
Gingrich, and company, ad nauseum infinitum.

But, it is GetRich's Band of Zealots who are running the show. They
are why Congress is so full of partisanship and hatred and personal
attacks. Gnewt GetRich, with his Politics of Hate (patent still pending),
and the Christian Coalition, with its Holy War, are the source of the
cancer eating away the American body politic.

CNN, a multi-billion dollar operation with hundreds of so-called
"experts" at its disposal, tried to figure this out on the day of the
impeachment vote, but failed. And millionaire celebrity pundits everywhere
fared just as poorly. Why?

It is in part, because these very same pundits and national news
corporations were singing the praises of Gnewt GetRich when he first rose
to power, thereby legitimizing him in the eyes of the voters. The whole
Establishment Media cooed and clucked over this kook, portraying him as a
Great Colossus, a Leader of Men, a Hero to Millions. He landed on the
covers of all the major newsmagazines and was the subject of nauseatingly
fawning media pieces by too many journalists and pundits to count.

It was all bullshit of course, and Dead Wrong, as I have said in this
column from the beginning. GetRich is actually the meanest, most vile and
rank, and evil little bastard to worm his way into Washington politics
since Tricky Dick Nixon crawled into town. The Washington press corps and
pundit-elite would have to admit to being accomplices to Gnewtie's rise to
Power, and hence to their role in getting us into the mess we are in today,
if they were to correctly answer the question of "Why?".

But, they can't do that. With more and more people turning away from
Corporate Media Conglomerates and flocking toward columns like this one (a
personal "Thank you!" goes out to the many thousands of readers (and
growing) of this column, here in America and across the globe) on the
Internet, the Old Media can't possibly admit its fault in helping to bring
about one of the greatest Constitutional crises in American political
history.

So, how do we rid the body politic of this cancerous tumor, without
killing the body? In the short term, this means that the American People
must apply serious pressure on the Senate Republicans to end the coup. It
means making nonstop phone calls to their offices; letters, emails, and
faxes; massive demonstrations; letters-to-editors; and heavy Internet
politicking; and anything else you can think of. Also, positive messages
of support must pour into Democratic offices with equal vigor to reassure
and support Democrats in the Senate.

Get loud. Get rowdy. Get serious. The VAST MAJORITY of Americans
want censure, not impeachment or removal from office. This huge majority
of voting Americans cannot and will not be ignored by Senators anxious to
retain their seats in Congress.

In the long term, Democrats and the American People must do more,
though. They must get out and vote, as so many did in November, in each
and every election. However, this is especially true of the year 2000
elections. If the People really get out and vote, Democrats will control
both Houses of Congress and the White House.

That still leaves Republicans in control of The Supreme Court, the
majority of Governorships, and most of the Establishment Media, often
called the fourth branch of government. However, it will put a serious
dent in Republican plans to practice more of their slash and burn system of
anti-democracy which they've become so good at these past six years.

All of this is very doable, my friends. A little-remembered, but much
worried-over fact (by the Repubs), is that in terms of the raw number of
voters out there, the Democrats are the majority party in the United States
(with Independents running a strong second). And since we have a
winner-take-all system of elections, instead of the much more civilized
proportional representation, Dems have an advantage.

The Republicans though are able to compete by utilizing their most
cherished, most highly-valued and sacred commodity: $$money$$. Lots of
it. Preferably corporate. And in large, unmarked bills, thank you very
much.

But mainly, the Republicans think American voters will forget all about
the Republican coup of 1998, come 2000, because of voter ignorance and
memory deficiency. That is a fundamental mistake in strategy. The
Republicans are right that many Americans are dumber than dirt and twice as
ignorant.

You're talking about a mass of people who think "fact is fiction and TV
reality". A group of people who know more about Mickey Mouse and Donald
Duck than Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson. Think of Homer Simpson
without the endearing part.

Yes, the People do often forget many, many things. However, the
difference is that usually it is both parties who bury the past, to cover
their mutual indiscretions and illegalities. But Democrats, unless
unbelievably stupid (a real possibility unfortunately), will make the Coup
of 1998 a central theme of the year 2000 elections. This will serve to
remind any and all dullards out there who have forgotten, about what the
Republicans did to America and to the American People.

In the meantime, prepare for more personal attacks against the
President by Professional Clinton-haters, who would be lost and miserable
without someone or something to hate. Then, watch as Clinton-haters turn
their Mad Gaze toward Al Gore. Soon enough, if not stopped by The American
People, these seething idiots will try to tear down another Presidency.
Don't let it happen.

Yes, Watergate was a Coup D'etat
by Patrick J. Buchanan
------------------------------------------------------------------------
June 17, 1997

Until I saw an unctuous individual babbling on about how our terrified city
feared a coup d'etat by Richard Nixon in 1974, I had decided not to write
on the 25th anniversary of Watergate. But that did it. Watergate was indeed
a coup. It was the overthrow of an elected president by a media and
political elite he had routed in a 49-state landslide the like of which
America had never seen. In taking Nixon down, that elite was not motivated
by any love of law or the Constitution. It was driven by hatred.

The media and political establishment hated Nixon for his lead role in
nailing Alger Hiss as a Soviet spy and in blistering its New Deal heroes as
witless dupes of Joseph Stalin. It hated Nixon because he rallied the
nation against them, when he called on the "Great Silent Majority" to stand
with him for peace with honor in Vietnam, and turned Vice President Agnew
loose on them to the delight of a nation that had come to detest media
arrogance and bias. And it hated Nixon because he seemed, with the mining
of Haiphong and bombing of Hanoi, to have won a war they said could not --
and should not -- be won.

With every provincial capital under Saigon control, and America's POWs
coming home, the left seethed with resentment. And when it was revealed in
March of 1973 that there had been a cover-up of the Watergate break-in, the
establishment united as one to destroy Nixon. Nixon shredded the
Constitution! they howled. But this is arrant nonsense. The Constitution
was in tatters when Nixon arrived in the capital in 1969.

It had been scissored to bits by Earl Warren, William O. Douglas, William
Brennan and the rest of the merry men of the Warren Court. And every
unconstitutional power grab by that renegade court was celebrated by this
city. Nixon had an "Enemies List," they cried. How awful! But if anything
terrible ever happened to anyone on that list -- other than a lost
invitation to a White House Christmas party -- it has yet to be discovered.
Nixon abused the FBI to cover up Watergate, they said. Yep, he did try to
keep the FBI from expanding the Watergate investigation into campaign
finance. But earlier, many of the same journalists who professed themselves
sickened by this "abuse of power" had been recipients of the fruits of the
FBI surveillance of the hotel rooms of Martin Luther King Jr., with
recordings and photos of King's liaisons provided, courtesy of Lyndon
Johnson's White House. The press has never called to account the White
House and Justice Department aides responsible.

What did Nixon ever do to anyone, compared to what the liberals did to Dr.
King? Nixon tried to block The New York Times and The Washington Post from
printing the Pentagon Papers! He sure did. To this day, I find nothing
wrong with the elected head of the executive branch going to the Supreme
Court to seek an injunction against publication of top-secret documents
stolen from the U.S. Department of Defense by a disloyal employee. The
Pentagon Papers had nothing to do with Nixon. They detailed the
decision-making of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, which had
marched us into the Asian war from which Nixon was bravely trying to
extricate the nation with honor. Yet, Nixon was bedeviled at every step by
the same hypocrites who had cheered on JFK and LBJ.

Did Nixon misuse and abuse his power? Yes, he did. Instead of creating a
"Plumbers" unit in the White House to run down national security leaks, he
should have left the black-bag jobs, as his predecessors did, to J. Edgar
Hoover. But Nixon was not hated so much for what he did wrong as for what
he did right -- exposing the near-treasonous conduct of much of the
American left during Vietnam. And when his presidency was broken, that left
saw to it that aid to Vietnam was cut off, guaranteeing the defeat and
death of the South in the all-out invasion by the Communist North in 1975.
The mind-set of Nixon enemies was never more manifest than in their
uncontrolled rage and hysteria when President Ford pardoned him, denying
them the sensual delight of seeing Nixon in the dock. History, however, has
a way of settling accounts.

Having destroyed Nixon, the liberals got Jimmy Carter, who announced that
Vietnam was a "racist" war and Americans had gotten over our "inordinate
fear of Communism." During Carter's one term, the Soviet empire drove
deeper into Asia, Africa and even Central America, producing a conservative
backlash that elected Ronald Reagan, who declared Vietnam "a noble cause"
and led America to triumph in the Cold War. So let the left celebrate how
it saved us all from Richard Nixon, as the republic recalls who it was that
rescued America from the left and saved the world from the Soviet empire.
