Linda Tripp named year's worst-dressed woman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Calling her a ``sheepdog in drag,'' fashion gadfly
Mr. Blackwell named tape-and-tell troublemaker Linda Tripp the worst
dressed woman of 1998 Tuesday.
The award adds a new wrinkle to the bad publicity Tripp has endured since
giving Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr tapes she made of erstwhile best
friend Monica Lewinsky talking about her affair with President Bill
Clinton.
But Mr. Blackwell, the no-first-name fashion designer whose annual
worst-dressed list has become a Hollywood tradition, insisted at a news
conference that his naming Tripp as poorly-clad public enemy number one was
not political.
``This is not anything more than a fashion statement. Linda Tripp is a
shaggy sheepdog in drag, the 'Starr' of her own 'Stylegate','' the fashion
expert said as he unveiled his 39th annual list.
Tripp, who has become the butt of talk show hosts and TV skits, ranked as a
fashion disaster ahead of second placed Madonna, whom Blackwell dismissed
as a ``glitzy gargoyle'' and a ''neo-Gothic fright,'' and third-placed
Titanic movie star Kate Winslet, who Blackwell said should have sent her
wardrobe down with the doomed ocean liner.
Carmen Electra, the on-again, off-again wife of basketball ''bad boy''
Dennis Rodman, was fourth on the list, called ''fashion Viagra in heels''
by Mr Blackwell, whose own giant pinky ring and glittery diamond stick pin
saying ``Big Mouth'' might not, themselves, rank as fashion classics.
Singers Courtney Love and Mariah Carey were fifth and sixth on the list,
respectively, with Love described as looking more like ``cold cuts and
Spam'' than the ``Goddess of Glam.'' Blackwell dismissed Carey as
``shrinkwrapped cheesecake.''
Seventh and eighth were actresses Marisa Tomei and Sigourney Weaver. Of the
latter, Blackwell said she was ``the high priestess of fashion pretense.''
He added, ``If you are looking for an 'Alien' call Sigourney.''
In ninth place was actress Sandra Bullock whom Blackwell dismissed as a
``Victorian lamp shade on the loose.''
In last place was ``ER'' star Alex Kingston. ``She mixed, she matched...she
missed,'' Blackwell said.
Blackwell said he did not put Monica Lewinsky on his list because ``I liked
the way she looked at the beginning of all this -- with the large hats and
that French look. But now she is slipping. She is beginning to look like a
'Valley Girl'.''
He praised first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton as having her own unique look
and put her on his best-dressed list along with actresses Gwyneth Paltrow,
Minnie Driver, Kim Basinger, Gloria Stuart, Roma Downey and Julia Roberts,
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria and
talk show queen Oprah Winfrey.
Blackwell said picking his worst-dressed list this year was not easy.
``Trust me, it is not a pretty sight. It was a year that has seen an
endless stream of couture catastrophes and fashion blasphemies...If I want
to watch out-of-control dinosaurs, I'll check out Congress.''
