Roger Hedgcock, a talk radio host on KOGO radio and a commentator for KUSI television, has been relieved of his TV duties following a Tuesday broadcast in which he promoted an anti-Clinton advertising campaign. Hedgcock told CNS that KUSI informed him Wednesday evening that he was "suspended until further notice," because of his TV commentary about the "Dear Mr. President" radio campaign, in which children read imaginary letters to Clinton seeking his advice on how to get out of trouble for lying. The ads have been running this week in Washington, D.C. and New York City, and the ad's producer, San Diego songwriter Steve Vaus, has been trying to raise money to run the ads in other cities across the country. "Along with Gingrich and Livingston, I've now lost my job for advocating that Clinton lose his," said Hedgcock, who's done commentary for KUSI since the mid-1990s and been a top-rated San Diego broadcaster for 13 years. According to Hedgcock, KUSI was uncomfortable with his idea of doing a commentary about Vaus and his commercials, and the TV station suggested he instead do a segment on pornography publisher Larry Flynt and his quest for sexual information on Republican Members of Congress. But Hedgcock did the segment on Vaus Tuesday and was taken off the air at KUSI. The following day, Hedgcock went on his radio show to talk about the TV station's move, and asked listeners to call KUSI to complain, a move Hedgcock said led to a telephone call from KUSI interim news director Greg Rawdin. "He said 'you're suspended until further notice,'" Hedgcock told CNS. "He said 'we don't want you talking about this o the radio.'" When contacted by CNS, Rawdin refused to comment about his conversation with Hedgcock, but KUSI owner Mike McKinnon denied that he or Rawdin tried to muzzle Hedgcock on his radio show. McKinnon disputed other aspects of Hedgcock's account of the situation as well, telling CNS that the broadcaster was put "on hiatus" because he aired a commentary without prior station approval. McKinnon also said Hedgcock wasn't telling the truth about the circumstances surrounding his absence from KUSI's airwaves. "Roger's talking about Clinton lying - he'd better watch his own act," said McKinnon. "We just told him that it wasn't in the guidelines that we agreed to, and that we weren't going to let him do it until we talked about it. This came out of the dark. He blindsided us on this show," said McKinnon. McKinnon told CNS that Hedgcock will remain off-the-air at KUSI "until Roger decides to live up to his contract." Hedgcock's TV report included an appeal for contributions to help pay for airing the radio commercials, which McKinnon said ran afoul of KUSI's policy regarding use of the airwaves for certain causes. "We're not the fundraising effort for some individual to raise money for some political campaign," said McKinnon. Hedgcock told CNS that the TV station does hold some sway over his commentaries, but said that it wasn't an issue in this instance. "Under the contract, they retain a right not to air those they don't like. They've never done that," said Hedgcock. "They didn't say 'no, don't do it,' they said 'well, how about this Larry Flynt- Bob Barr thing.'" Hedgcock was referring to Flynt's release this week of information alleging that Rep. Bob Barr (R-GA) had not been faithful to his wife in a previous marriage. Barr is one of the 13 House managers prosecuting the impeachment of Clinton in his Senate trial. After disputing Hedgcock's account of the situation, McKinnon went on to accuse Hedgcock of harassing the TV station by asking his radio listeners to complain to KUSI about taking him off the air. "It's kind of a typical talk show deal," said McKinnon. "These guys get on the air and they try to harass people they don't agree with." "I think that's harassment. I think when he tells his viewers (sic) to call and tie up the phone lines, that's harassing the station," McKinnon told CNS. Neither Hedgcock nor McKinnon indicated that any discussions were planned that could resolve the situation between the broadcaster and the TV station, and whether Hedgcock is "on hiatus" or "suspended," either term appears to be in effect indefinitely. "Roger's the one who fired himself. I guess Roger's going to be the guy to deal with it," said McKinnon. "I didn't fire Roger." Not for commercial use.
