-Caveat Lector-

Former President Reagan made people feel good, didn't he? I remember when
he first came into office.... He was a
handsome man...and Nancy looked great in those beautiful gowns... and the
inauguration was the Republican answer to Camelot...
It was one of the most expensive inaugurations on record. The greedsters
came out in record numbers, of course. Corporate bigwigs flying in from
California to attend the coronation. And there was such a mood of elation
in the country. At last, the western part of the country had its
spokesperson..who wanted "smaller" government...and, of course, a larger
military... (Someone had to keep the evil empire at bay.) Besides, there
were some hefty defense contracts to be awarded...

Then, things started
turning sour.... President Reagan's idea of a smaller government meant
a government that would cut back on programs affecting the nation's
most vulnerable of citizens...but what the hell...they weren't major
contributors
to the coffers of the Republican party. So, the Reagan Revolution was a
rather one-sided affair. Spend, spend, spend when it came to programs
to help corporations fatten at the trough....but cutbacks for children,
minorities, disabled vets, the elderly. And it became clear that
President Reagan didn't like unions or working people much either. Just
ask the air traffic controllers..

But a shrewd strategy was designed to provide a cover for one of the
biggest transfers of wealth (the poor and middle class giving to
the deserving rich) in the nation's history: moral decline became the big
issue-- Abortion, prayer in schools, teen-age pregnancies,
affirmative action--the strategy was an old one. Divide and rule. While
the greedsters were busy lining their pockets, we were at one another's
throats... not too different from what we do on this list..

And this nice smiling man who had charmed us
so...and still does, to this day...turned out to be something not quite so
nice. Deficits exploded...deregulation led to one scandal after
another. The conservative millenium began to look rather frightening.
Of course, for the nation's richest of citizens, they've seen their
incomes triple.... while the poorest of citizens have become poorer.

Sensing the dissatisfaction, President Bush promised to be "kinder and
gentler"....but the seduction had turned into an all-out rape. But even
more disturbing were the loonies and complete crazies who were part of
this "revolution." At least, President Bush and President Reagan had a
certain amount of charm.. And they appeared to be human. But some
truly frightening types were associated with the movement: Newt, with his
talk of orphanages, Rush (who defies description), and Buchanan who
talked about people being "homeless by choice."

In response, the American people voted TWICE for a Democratic president to
try and stem the tide of the loony right wing. Sadly, the Republican
party just can't face reality: the majority of Americans would rather have
Bill Clinton with all of his imperfections and admittedly sleazy behavior
than see the conservative or Reagan revolution finally triumph.
