Russia Objects to UNSCOM Report on Iraqi Weapons
UNITED NATIONS, January 25 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations
Special Commission (UNSCOM) in charge of Iraqi disarmament did
not officially distribute a report on Iraqi weapons on Monday
because of Russia's objection, diplomats said.
Russia's permanent representative to the U.N. Sergei Lavrov
said he doesn't believe the Security Council has a consensus
regarding information from UNSCOM.
Since the military strikes launched by the United States and
Britain against Iraq in December, Russia has toughened its stance
in seeking the abolishment of UNSCOM. France supports the idea
and is calling for its replacement by a new arms monitoring body.
UNSCOM, led by Australian diplomat Richard Butler, has been
blamed for withdrawing from Iraq in mid-December without
reporting to the Security Council first.
The December 16-19 attacks on Iraq, the heaviest since the
Gulf War in 1991, were taken on the basis of an UNSCOM report,
which said Iraq did not cooperate with UNSCOM.
The U.S. and Britain are the only permanent members of the
Security Council to call for the return of UNSCOM to Baghdad to
continue arms inspections.
But Iraq said UNSCOM is dead following the U.S.-Britain
military action. It has called for the lifting of sanctions on
Iraq imposed following its invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Enditem
