I apologize for the length of this one. - Audrey AUDREY'S MISSILES A newsletter dedicated to the peaceful reform of the United States government. THE BRIDGE TO THE 21ST CENTURY In his Detroit speech several years ago Bill Clinton talked about building a bridge to the 21st century, noting that we are living in a time of change. However, the most significant changes we are seeing now are not the ones he envisioned in his speech. Reports from around the world show startling increases both in usage and in shipments of illegal drugs, and the worst of this is that only a small portion of the drugs shipped are ever intercepted! Late last month, the U.S. Coast Guard found a cocaine shipment in CARIBBEAN waters 125 miles south of Jamaica. The astonishing thing about the discovery was that the shipment weighed 9,500 pounds, or four and one half tons! ``This amount of cocaine could put at least one dose of the drug in the hands of every school child across America,'' U.S. Transport Secretary Rodney Slater told reporters in Houston. The Coast Guard boarded the Panamanian-registered vessel for a routine inspection and found the cocaine hidden in a cargo of iron ore. In another part of the world Reuters News Agency reports that the French police have seized 1.2 tons of cocaine in a raid on a suburban Paris warehouse, more of the drug than was seized in FRANCE in all of 1998. The shipment has been traced to Latin America and believed to have been routed through the French island of Guadeloupe. A record amount of drugs were seized in JAPAN last year. According to Kyodo news service Japanese authorities confiscated a record high 869.81 kilograms of illegal drugs that smugglers attempted to bring into the country, the Finance Ministry said recently. The figure far surpassed the previous record of 769.51 kg registered in 1996, a ministry official said. Associated Press reports that Some 81,000 gangsters, known as "yakuza," operate in Japan, running drug-trafficking, gun-smuggling, prostitution and illegal real estate dealings. "Japan has one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world and an absolutely inadequate judicial structure to fight it," said Pino Arlacchi, executive director for the U.N. drug control and crime prevention. Reuters reports that IRAN and the United Nations have signed an agreement on fighting drug smuggling. Iran is a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Europe and Gulf Arab states. Iranian officials say there are half a million addicts in the country of more than 60 million people. Local media have put the number at up to one million. Under the agreement the United Nations will set up an office in Tehran in an attempt to stem the flow of illicit drugs moving through Iran. In AFGHANISTAN the fundamentalist Muslims are looking now at the prospects for conquest of additional territory in Central Asia, conquests financed by their drug trafficking. The MEXICAN army and police reported that their joint airborne drug interception network captured a small plane carrying half a ton of cocaine when the craft landed at a Caribbean coast airstrip. Police arrested the Colombian pilot and two Mexican suspects, and seized 1,016 pounds of cocaine. The Seattle Times Company is reporting that U.S. federal officials disclosed yesterday that they have seen an alarming new "explosion" of cocaine production in COLOMBIA. Gen. Barry McCaffrey, the White House drug czar, said cultivation of cocaine has jumped 26 percent in the past year in Colombia, with signs of an increase in opium production there as well. And in the UNITED STATES, the drug problem has reached the crisis stage in some areas. In Texas there has been a 500 percent increase in heroin use in the city of Plano, an upper middle class suburb of Dallas. One of the most shocking incidents was the announcement of the indictment of 29 people in connection with a wave of fatal heroin overdoses. Authorities say the suspects knew that the drug they were selling was causing deaths. The indictment charges that there was a conspiracy to smuggle "black tar" heroin from Mexico into the United States and distribute it in Plano. The prosecutors charge that "Despite their knowledge that young people were dying from the use of this drug ... the defendants intentionally, in a very calculated, cold- blooded way distributed (it) with the knowledge that it was killing people," he said. Despite community meetings and dozens of arrests, heroin continues to flow into the area. The Journal of the American Medical Association is now listing accidental drug overdose of illicit drugs as one of the leading causes of death in this country (3,800 to 5,200 deaths annually). But what about SINGAPORE? They must have some effective means of dealing with the problem, since drug addiction there is reported to be falling. We know they have very strict laws and very strict enforcement of those laws (the death penalty). However, Singapore is not immune to corruption. It has been charged that, at the highest levels of the Singaporean government, officials are engaging in joint business ventures with one of the world's most notorious drug lords, the drug-backed military dictatorship of Burma (Myanmar). This is being done using the New York-based Morgan Guaranty Trust Company, a subsidiary of J.P. Morgan, as a custodial operative. The connection has been confirmed by corporate, government and legal documents from four countries and was also asserted by high-ranking U.S. narcotics and government officials in private interviews. Valeriy Smoliy, Deputy Prime Minister, UKRAINE: (Before the UN General Assembly) INTERNATIONAL DRUG CRIME IS A STRONGLY DESTABILIZING FORCE, CAPABLE OF RUINING STATES' POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC FOUNDATIONS, AS WELL AS GLOBAL PEACE AND SECURITY. As time lays bare the motives for the construction of Bill Clinton's bridge to the 21st century, we have a clearer picture of the structure itself. His "free trade" bridge is swayed by evil winds of change and battered by waves of human misery. The bridge looms up out of the mist, exposing the depth and breadth of the cancer of human criminality and greed, and providing a sinister pathway for mankind to usher in a dark new period in the history of the United States and the world......the time of the Drug Lords.
