Report: Cleric Linked to Bin Laden

DALLAS (AP) - FBI and court documents show that the head of a suburban
Dallas mosque has a decade-long history of contacts with front
organizations for Osama bin Laden's international terrorist network, The
Dallas Morning News reported today.

Moataz Al-Hallak, imam of the Islamic Society of Arlington mosque, was
named on telephone and mailing lists for a bin Laden group supporting
Afghan guerrillas in 1990, the newspaper said.

His name surfaced again last August in the files of another Arlington man,
Wadih el Hage, who was directing a bin Laden charity in Kenya.

El Hage, who has acknowledged being bin Laden's personal secretary but
denies any role in terrorism, is jailed in New York on charges of
conspiring with bin Laden to bomb two U.S. embassies in Africa on Aug. 7.

Twelve Americans were among the 224 people killed in the bombings in Kenya
and Tanzania. Thousands of others were wounded.

Al-Hallak has not been charged with any crime and told The New York Times
last week that he has no connection to violence.

The FBI declined comment to the Morning News, and Pat Fitzgerald, the
federal prosecutor leading the bin Laden investigation in New York, did not
return telephone calls.

During el Hage's bail hearing last week, Fitzgerald described Al-Hallak as
a ``contact between members of the bin Laden organization.''

``This is a case about murder and conspiracy to murder, not about
religion,'' Fitzgerald said at the hearing.
