-Caveat Lector- http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/urbanwarfare990224.html By Barbara Starr ABCNEWS.com W A S H I N G T O N, Feb. 24 - The U.S. Marines are looking for a few good men and women-but not the types you might think. The Marines are advertising for somebody who can play the role of "Spunky Woman War-Zone Reporter (CNN Christiane Amanpour-type)" from the "Political Spin News Network (PSNN)." The Marines also want an "older woman" and "older man" over the age of 40 who can play the role of "Furzian Cleric" and the "Hagi Cleric." The Marines also want 200 people for six days who are "not clean cut and neat nor conservatively dressed." But before you rush to your local Marine Corps recruiting station, be advised: It's all a war game. They want a contractor to provide people to pretend they live in a city in an unstable developing nation, where unrest has gotten so bad the Marines have been called in to conduct a humanitarian operation and restore order. >From March 12 to 18, Marines will be conducting the "Urban Warrior Advanced Warfighting Experiment" in the San Francisco Bay area near Oakland and Monterey. The war game is part of an effort to test new equipment, tactics and techniques for waging battles in 21st-Century cities. Cities To Be Future of Warfare The entire U.S. military has stepped up training in recent years for what it calls "Military Operations in Urban Terrain." A number of programs are looking at developing new weapons and military gadgets, such as sensors that can "see" through the walls of building to determine if there are enemies behind them. Urban warfare is getting attention for one simple reason: The Marines believe that by the year 2020, 70 percent of the world's population will live in cities - with the majority of them located along coastlines. The California war game has not been without controversy. Originally the Marines wanted to "take down" the historic Presidio military base in San Francisco. Local officials, worried about the environment, refused. Now the game will be played at less sensitive locations around the area. Even so, the Marines warn that their wargame will include "military people running, yelling and shooting blanks in an action/adventure scenario." All Types of Roles Available The military casting call is detailed in the usually staid, gray and very dull government bulletin of contract notices, called Commerce Business Daily. The Marines also want to fill a number of other roles, including a "younger, large male to play the role of local sheriff/constabulatory chief;" men and women to play the role of deputy sheriffs; one "40-49 year old female" to play mayor; and a variety of thespians to play government officials, homeless people and aid workers for the "Feed Everyone Everywhere Daily" (FEED) charity. And by the way, the spunky woman war-zone reporter has to bring her own hand mike, notepad and pen. But the Marines say the items "do not have to be functional in any way."
