-Caveat Lector- from a friend: ----- As always, Caveat Lector. Om K ----- The Club In 1838 the second oldest social organization (after S&B, 1833) in the Yale community was formed--The Club. It was also called "The Old Men's Club." Its first members included leading members of the city of New Haven--later it was only a concern of members of the Yale community. The some 25-lifetime members "represented the social and intellectual elite of the entire university." It was founded during the presidency of Jeremiah Day (1817-1846). The six founders were all New Haven residents. Two of the six taught in Yale College: Josiah Willard Gibbs, Professor of sacred literature (B.A. 1809, M.A. 1812) and Theodore Dwight Woolsey, Professor of the Greek language and literature (B.A. 1820, M.A. 1823). Two of the six were local ministers. The fifth was a local lawyer. The sixth founder was a local physician. Early members included William H. Russell (S&B co-founder) (B.A. 1833, M.A. 1836, M.D. 1838) and William L. Kingsley (B.A. 1843, founder of Scroll and Key). Membership was exclusively from the university community by 1873. In 1921, on the 125th anniversity of its founding, Alexander M. Witherspoon (B.A.1918, M.A. 1921, Ph.D. 1923), club historian, described the 160 or so members as being "faithful and honorable" having included presidents of universities, Governor, Ambassador, Chief Justice of the State and nation and Presidents of the U.S. Source: Dan A.
