 TODAY'S THING WE DON'T UNDERSTAND

     Lots of people apparently believe Chicken Little is right. Crain's
  Chicago Business reports sales of generators and freeze-dried food are
  booming - thanks to concerns the "millennium bug" will disrupt power,
  communications and transportation systems.
     The newspaper says preparations no longer are confined to fringe
  groups. Otherwise unflappable working people, professionals and
  executives are preparing for the possibility of power outages, food
  shortages and financial collapse this coming January 1st.
     A number of businesses are starting to realize the sales potential of
  millennium bug fears. Tru-Serv Corporation - a Chicago-based cooperative
  serving 10-thousand stores, including True Value hardware stores - will
  include a Year 2000 display featuring wood stoves, lanterns, fuel,
  batteries and flashlights at a buying market for members in Atlanta in
  April.
     Ace Hardware says it'll include a list of 50 to 100 Y2K-readiness
  items in a March newsletter to its more than five-thousand member
  stores. Ace Merchandise Manager Jimmy Alexander tells Crain's - "We've
  already sold three years' worth of oil lamps in the month of January
  alone."
     My Own Meals - which makes shelf-stable meals - says it plans to
  double its average inventory by May.

One might call this a good thing: the public is preparing for potential Y2K
difficulties, thus indicating that mass hysteria, rioting, looting, etc. could be
squelched before it begins (assuming the Y2K problem will really turn out
to be more than a scary bedtime story written by a Big Brother who wants us
to run and jump in bed with him, that is, be even more dependent on him than
we already are). However, if one concludes, as many already have, that
military interests (Big Brother's drones at the most visible-and clueless- level)
are poised to take great advantage of the potential Y2K situation (whether
inherently dangerous for modern society or intentionally blown out of proportion
by THEM), then one must also look at the industrial implications and motives
for the military/industrial complex as a whole.

Even with Clinton's pay raises, the military half of the M/I complex has been
whining that it's not enough and that service people are still leaving the
military in droves. The question to ask is: Would a Y2K breakdown of societal
supports alleviate these problems for them or lead to a process which would
later alleviate them? They would need something akin to a draft resulting
from some military threat or cataclysmic societal event.

Even though the U.S. economy has been rolling along with little or no
adjustment made to radically low interest rates, the industrial half of the M/I
complex has been sagging for years, just like its partner. Clinton has recently
proposed more spending in this area too, but he couldn't legitimately
sustain such spending without an enemy looming to strike the American
people, especially now that the USSR has been splintered into many selfish,
vodka drinking, virtually impotent, poor countries with no more mother to
feed them (the U.S. powers would like to assume this role, but they are
already financially stretched in trying to keep the rest of their "holdings"
pacified, docile, pliant to their will, and consuming lots of fatty, carcinogenic
products; however, this period of suffering may have been calculated to make
them more agreeable when the U.S. steps in as their "savior" at a later point,
providing they don't let the situation go too long and the Russian peoples revert
to Communism). The question to ask here is: What situation would give the
Industrial half of the complex the boost it needs to begin soaking up
lucrative government contracts again?

I believe the answer to these questions has already been calculated.
Considering Clinton's actions (quite strange for a Democratic president
with delusions of being the next JFK--which, by the way, he would like to be,
except for the ending of the story) in financing military build-ups and
concurrent increases in weapons spending, one could imagine a scenario
like this:

(1) knowing the pres' weaknesses and character, covert operations
plant key people near the president to begin the operation: Monica, Tripp,
etc. [ I apologize to Colleen for this, but it was necessary to complete the
scenario  ;-)  ];

(2) the scandal breaks and the pres discovers just how deeply
and pervasively throughout his political environment it runs;

(3) the offer comes: "We'll get you out smoothly and tell our trained attack
dog Starr to make it look good but hold back on some of the arguments
more germane to the case. We'll also pull a few strings in the Senate. It'll look
rough for you, but don't worry. The end result will be in the bag. However, you
have to do something for us, that is, if you don't want your presidency to end
'badly'" (double meaning meant to be a threat on his life--wink, wink, nod, nod
--perhaps followed by a reference to JFK's resistance to the will of the M/I
complex);

(4) as a prelude beginning about step 2 of this progression, media tools
are used to start public awareness of the Y2K problem and the possibility
of biological attack by foreign terrorists (greatly dramatized by the recent
stunt of Mr. Patrick during a rare open session of Congress);

(5) the engineered terrorist threat of biological attack provides the rationale
for Clinton's complete change of idealism and philosophy (increased
military and weapons spending), not to mention that it heightens public
paranoia;

(6) the future: the building concern over the Y2K problem is
triggered into a full-blown panic by a few media stories of utility failures,
food shortages due to distribution problems, etc., and the military steps
in to declare martial law and "restore order."

So, in this scenario, the Clinton scandal was engineered to influence his
needed cooperation. The threats of biological attack provide both the
funding to strengthen the M/I complex and the rationale for the president's
sudden "change." Finally, the Y2K component becomes the catalyst for the
final takeover.

Final question:
Is the promotion and sale of "Y2K items" merely a manifestation of the
capitalist mind set, or is it somehow tied economically to the industrial
aspect of this scenario? Could it be tied to the public paranoia campaign
by its tendency to agitate those still complacent about Y2K, or is that just
a coincidental "side-effect?"
