grow basic "legs" instead of wings. Researchers at Harvard Medical School in
Boston, Massachusetts, took a gene normally found only in chicken legs and

is snapping your picture. The "Happy Face Crater" was captured in a wide-
angle image recorded by Mars Global Surveyor's camera. The feature, which
has a much more mirthful appearance than the better known but decidedly grim
"Face on Mars," is really the 134-mile-wide Galle Crater on the eastern side
of a basin called Argyre Planitia. Features within the circular crater form
the eyes and smiling mouth. In color, the picture has a bluish-white tone
caused by frost. The "Happy Face" was first noticed in images sent back to
Earth during the Viking 1 mission in 1976. ###

ed a 260 million-year-old fossil that bolsters the theory that South Africa
was the place where scaly, cold-blooded reptiles evolved into the ancestors
of furry, warm-blooded mammals. The fossil is of a primitive sheep-sized
animal that lived along the shores of an inland sea before the age of dino-
saurs in what is now the Karoo Desert in southern South Africa. The fossil
