This just landed in my mailbox; I have no idea how good the book is,
and make no recommendations one way or the other.

SPRINGFIELD, Va., March 9 /PRNewswire/
[EXCERPTS]

The Central Intelligence Agency has just made available to the public The
Final Months of the War With Japan: Signals Intelligence, U.S. Invasion
Planning, and the A-Bomb Decision, an intelligence monograph by Douglas J.
MacEachin.

The author, retired from the CIA in 1997 and now a Senior Fellow at Harvard's
Kennedy School of Government, examines the crucial role of SIGINT in U.S.
military planning during the final stages of the War with Japan in 1945.
SIGINT, or Signals Intelligence, refers to a broad range of intercepted
communications. It is through SIGINT that the reader learns that the Japanese
had correctly identified Kyushu Island as the probable site of a U.S.
invasion and were dramatically expanding their defensive forces there. It
was this buildup that forced U.S. leaders to consider alternatives to the
invasion strategy and, thus, the plan to drop the atomic bombs on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki was born.

In his research, the author located enough declassified and unclassified
materials to present the story in considerable detail. His sources include
minutes of meetings, decision memoranda, planning papers, estimates of
casualties, as well as handwritten notes from President Truman.
