@ Conspiracy of the Week. Assembled by a shadowy figure known only as Kenny
J, the Conspiracy of the Week elist is a monthly roundup of the covert and
the covered up -- those vast conspiracies that can only come to light thru
the ceaseless efforts of truth-seeking Web denizens. Here you’ll find news,
updates, and links regarding those worldwide military-industrial conspira-
cies that can be so hard to keep up with in a workaday world. For instance,
there’s the insidious yet little-known fact that the cartoon Scooby Doo was
a government experiment exploring the links between TV and crime. You better
believe it, pal. You’ll also get updates on old conspiracy classics like
“The Moonwalk Was Faked,” “Atlantis Has Risen (but Is Being Kept Off the
Maps by the Illuminati),” and the soon-to-be-classic “The Gay TeleTubby.”

@ FREAK FACTORY - newsgroup of the day: talk.bizarre [unmoderated].
Description: The unusual, bizarre, curious, and often interesting.
The reason to come here isn't really clear; that's why the group is bizarre.
There is positively no focus on any one subject, no allegiance to any single
philosophy, no glue to hold the place together. What results is a smattering
of weirdness from all corners and a few lengthy threads. This cyperpost is
best for folks who are looking to hear or tell a wild story, like the one
recently posted about a girl who saved the entrails of her dead cat, then
pressed them in a book as a keepsake (yuck). See news:talk.bizarre

# Dog statue will obey city leash laws says artist. NEW YORK (AP) It's only
a bronze statue -- a dog that can't run wild, chase cars or bite anyone --
but that doesn't make it exempt from the city's leash laws. In the wake of
the city's crackdown on leash law violators, the creator of a life-sized
park statue called "Man & His Dog" reaffirmed Tuesday that his work will
include a leash. Http://www.cnn.com/US/9903/16/AM-DogStatueLeashed.ap/

# Gay drag 'nuns' draw Catholic ire. SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) The Roman Cath-
olic Archdiocese of San Francisco has *had* it with the Sisters of Perpetual
Indulgence. The "order" of drag performance artists who, clad in nun's hab-
its and vibrant face-paint, have shocked and amused the city for 20 years is
being damned by Catholic leaders for planning to stage a public celebration
of their troupe's anniversary on Easter Sunday. Men in dresses - iNDuLGe

# MOVIE OF THE WEEK: Luck of the Irish. QUEENSTOWN, N.Z. (CNN) Bringing a
bit of Irish flavor to a New Zealand pastime, an Irish woman celebrated St.
Patrick's day Wednesday by bungee jumping off a bridge wearing little more
than shamrocks. After having several of the green, three-leaf clovers
painted across her nude body, 29-year-old Lucy McLaughlin dove off a bridge
in Queenstown, bouncing up and down above the water attached to an elastic
cord. http://cnn.com/WORLD/asiapcf/9903/17/nude.bungee.jump/index.html

3. APS AWARDS: GOOD NEWS FOR MEMBERS. In honor of the APS [American Physical
Society] Centennial, Annals of Improbable Research has posted an article by
Scott Sandford, analyzing trends in APS membership and awards. Membership
has leveled off in recent years, while growth in the number of APS awards
has been exponential since 1950. If these trends continue, there will be one
award per member by 13 Apr 2076. At the celebration of the bi-centennial in
2100, there will be 307,000 awards per member <http://www.improbable.com>.

4. FUTURE ENERGY: NEW AGE ENERGY CONFERENCE MOVES TO COMMERCE. Booted out of
the State Department (WN 12 Mar 99), it's now the First International Confe-
rence on Future Energy (it used to be "Free Energy") and it will be held "In
cooperation with the U.S. Department of Commerce." But it's the same wacky
stuff. It would be good if some scientists attended. You can get details
from the Integrity Research Institute <http://www.erols.com/iri/>.
