-------- Explanation of Religious Holidays ----------

Religious holidays are very important in foreign countries.
Knowing these religious observances is a way of respect to your friends
and business associates worldwide.

Below is a very extensive list of the religious observances during April.
As you can see, it is a busy month.

April 1
Maundy Thursday -- Christian observance
* The Last Supper, the last meal that Jesus shared with
* his disciples on the eve of his arrest and crucifixion.
* According to the New Testament of the Bible, this day
* is significant because of Jesus's words over the bread
* and cup of wine, where he declares "This is my body"
* and "This is my blood of the covenant which is poured
* for many". Subsequently, this is the setting for
* which Christians observe Holy Communion.

April 1
Passover -- Jewish observance
* An annual Jewish festival, commemorates the exodus of
* the Israelites from Egypt. Passover was named for
* God's passing over the houses of the Israelites when
* he killed the first-born child in an Egyptian family.
* Also known as Pesach, it is marked by a special meal
* which includes unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
* Passover is observed over a period of 7 days.

April 2
Good Friday -- Christian observance
* This day is a rememberance of the crucifixion of Jesus.
* Jesus's crucifixion on the cross is considered to be
* the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for the sins
* of the world. It is the foundation for forgiveness
* in the Christian churches. For many Christians, this
* is a day of penance and mourning.

April 4
Easter -- Christian observance
* Easter celebrates the resurrection of Christ on the
* third day after his cruxification. On this day, Jesus
* rose from death and joined God in heaven.

April 5
Ching Ming Festival -- Lunar observance.
* Although it is not a religious day, it is a special
* day of honoring a family's ancestors. Families visit
* cemeteries to pay respects to the deceased.

April 13
Baisakhi -- Sikh observance
* A Sikh festival commemorating the founding in 1699
* of the Khalsa order of baptized Sikhs by the tenth
* guru of Sikhism, Guru Gobind Singh.

The following days have the same meaning for Catholic,
Protestant, Orthodox Russian and Greek Orthodox Christians.
Because of difference in date calculations, Orthodox and
Western Christians celebrate the Easter holidays on different dates.

April 9 -- Orthodox Christian observance Orthodox Friday.

April 11 -- Orthodox Christian observance
Orthodox Easter, also is known as Paskha.

April 17 -- Islamic New Year -- Islamic
* First day of the first month, Muharram, of the start
* of the new year. According to the Islamic calendar,
* this is the year 1420. This year is calculated from
* 622 AD - the year in which Mohammed traveled from
* Mecca to Medina.

April 25 -- Ninth Day of Muharram -- Islamic observance.
* Shite Moslems commemorate the martyrdom (the death)
* of Iman Hussein (grandson of Mohammed) of this day.

April 26 -- Tenth Day of Muharram -- Islamic observance.
* Observed and known as Ashura, Ashora and Id-el-Kabir
* in many Middle East and Far East countries.
* Important to Islams worldwide because it is in memory
* of Noah's departure from the Ark onto Mount Ararat
* and God's covenant with Noah.
