Elrick The National Law Journal 12-27-02 "After spending four years in prison for allegedly sexually abusing his children, a Leesburg, Va., attorney was acquitted of the charges this month in what may be Virginia's first case in which the susceptibility of children to suggestion played a major role. Bruce McLaughlin, 50, was convicted in 1998 on seven counts of sexually abusing three of his four children, who were then between the ages of 7 and 12. State v. McLaughlin, No. CR 11592....Anderson conceded that some police questions could have been phrased better, but he said the children's susceptibility to suggestion did not play a major role in the case. He said Levay successfully exploited inconsistencies in the children's testimony in 1998 and their return to the witness stand four years later. Even then, Anderson said, medical experts testified that rectal scarring on one of the victims proved sexual abuse. He said such compelling evidence is present in only one of 100 cases. The Milgram Experiment - A lesson in depravity, peer pressure, and the power of authority "The "teacher" is instructed to read a list of two word pairs and ask the "learner" to read them back. If the "learner" gets the answer correct, then they move on to the next word. If the answer is incorrect, the "teacher" is supposed to shock the "learner" starting at 15 volts....The "teacher" automatically is supposed to increase the shock each time the "learner" misses a word in the list. Although the "teacher" thought that he/she was administering shocks to the "learner", the "learner" is actually a student or an actor who is never actually harmed. (The drawing of lots was rigged, so that the actor would always end up as the "learner.") At times, the worried "teachers" questioned the experimenter, asking who was responsible for any harmful effects resulting from shocking the learner at such a high level. Upon receiving the answer that the experimenter assumed full responsibility, teachers seemed to accept the response and continue shocking, even though some were obviously extremely uncomfortable in doing so....The theory that only the most severe monsters on the sadistic fringe of society would submit to such cruelty is disclaimed. Findings show that, "two-thirds of this studies participants fall into the category of ‘obedient' subjects, and that they represent ordinary people drawn from the working, managerial, and professional classes (Obedience to Authority)." Ultimately 65% of all of the "teachers" punished the "learners" to the maximum 450 volts. No subject stopped before reaching 300 volts!"

On the other hand, what is undeniable is that corporations close to the Administration, have directly benefited from the increased defense spending arising from the aftermath of September 11. The Carlyle Group, DynCorp, and Halliburton certainly stand out as companies close to this Administration. Secretary Rumsfeld maintained in a hearing before Congress that we can afford the new spending, even though the request for more defense spending is the highest increase in twenty years and the Pentagon has lost $2.3 trillion.
