Magnetic first repels leaders

January 1 2003

Shanghai: German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji
took a test ride on the world's first commercial magnetic levitation train in Shanghai
yesterday.

The train rides on a magnetic cushion, instead of rolling, at speeds of up to 430kmh.

The BBC website reported that the train will represent the first application of the new
"maglev" technology, in which the train literally floats above the track.

But Mr Zhu dashed German hopes for a joint political declaration during Mr
Schroeder's three-day visit that would have given Transrapid International, the
German consortium that built the train, billions of dollars in new contracts in China.

"I hope Chinese and German engineers can perfect the technology and raise its
competitiveness and economy, thus creating an environment for the building of such
a high-speed transportation network in China," Mr Zhu said.

Critics reportedly say the train is too expensive and wastes energy. But Mr Zhu
toasted the
smooth run and hinted that the technology could be adopted elsewhere in China after
maglev trains begin running in Shanghai later this year.

The train, held up by powerful magnets, can complete the 30-kilometre journey from
Shanghai to its airport in minutes, according to the BBC report.

"I have complete confidence that the maglev technology will have a broad future in
China," Mr Zhu said, calling the two-year construction of the track from Shanghai's
financial district to its international airport a "miracle".

He had complained he felt dizzy after his first demonstration ride in July 2000.

China is pondering a 200km route from Shanghai's airport to Hangzhou and a
1250km line linking Shanghai to Beijing.

Transrapid - which groups Siemens AG, ThyssenKrupp and the German
Government - is hoping that success in Shanghai will lead to ventures elsewhere in
China and in the United States.

Transrapid and a Chinese partner, Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development
Co, said the first trains on the $2.2billion track would begin commercial operation by
the end of 2003.
