A Startling Confession
Israelis Say Shuttle Catastrophe Shows They are "Cursed" by
"Coincidence, Fate or God"
EDITOR's NOTE: Mention of divine retribution with regard to the Columbia
Space Shuttle disaster is being leaked in drips and drabs in the US
media, as witness the following two dispatches from today's New York
Times. The Times never definitively states by whom the Israelis are
cursed, yet it entertains the idea that they may be cursed by God. This
is a remarkable airing of insecurity and soul-searching, representing a
radical departure from the usual unyielding propaganda front, in which
the Zionist empire is projected as the sacred cosmic project of the
Almighty. The destruction of the space shuttle appears to have -- at
least momentarily -- shaken the confidence of The Holy People and by
extension, their American Golem.
N.Y. Times, Feb. 3, 2002, p. A23. CAIRO, Egypt: "...Hero is hardly the
first word that springs to mind when Arabs think of an Israeli air force
pilot, and the widespread use of that word on American television
networks to describe Col. Ilan Ramon, the Israeli astronaut, irked some
Arabs...
"In the Middle East, where the hand of God is never believed to be too
far off the tiller of daily events, one explanation for the shuttle
disaster quickly gained widespread currency today: divine retribution.
The average (Egyptian) cafe denizen, not to mention the odd newspaper
columnist, looked no further than the Israeli colonel on board the space
shuttle Columbia and reports that it apparently began crumbling over
Palestine, Texas, to conclude that God was sending the United States a
message...
N.Y. Times, Feb. 3, 2002, p. A15. QIRYAT MOTZKIN, Israel: "...(Israeli
high school) students wondered if Israel, and Jews, were being singled
out for suffering. Some noted that there was also a Jewish astronaut
(Judith Resnick) aboard the Challenger when it exploded in 1986.
"Many Israelis talked today about coincidence, fate or God, about how a
spacecraft carrying the first Israeli astronaut could break up over the
town of Palestine, Texas. The journalist Arik Bechar captured this
reaction in a column...in (the Feb. 2 edition of the Israeli newspaper),
'Maariv.'
"Ilan Ramon fell victim to the same curse that has turned the Israelis
into a paranoid people," Bechar wrote. "And how can they be blamed? The
representatives of 30 nations have already hitched a ride with the
American space fleet, and all of them returned safely to Earth to be
able to tell their grandchildren, when the day comes, that the tortured
Earth looks much better from afar."
