Students, workers plan anti-war walkouts across California

LOS ANGELES - High school and college students throughout the state
were planning to walk
out of classes Wednesday - some with their teachers' approval - as part of
a nationwide protest against a U.S.-led war with Iraq.

Students from about 40 high schools and colleges in Los Angeles were
expected to skip classes and participate in various peace rallies, according
to organizers.

In the San Franciso Bay area, students from nine colleges and dozens of
high schools were planning demonstrations at Oakland's Lake Merritt and in
downtown San Francisco, said Daniel Pace, a coordinator for the anti-war
group Not in Our Name.

"The idea is to take the resistance to the war to the next level," Pace said.
"It's important for this to happen before the war begins to show that we're
not accepting the inevitability of the war."

Peace activist groups also were asking workers to call in sick, businesses to
close for the day and religious groups to join the protest.

A morning interfaith service was to be held in front of the federal building
in downtown Los Angeles. Cardinal Roger Mahony, head of the Roman
Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, also planned to talk about the
possible war in his Ash Wednesday service at Cathedral of Our Lady of the
Angels.

Some teachers prepared for the walkouts by canceling classes in advance.

Mary Ann Maggiore, a history professor from Dominican University in San
Rafael, said she asked her students last week if they would oppose her
canceling class. When the students agreed to join her in the walkout,
Maggiore assigned them readings relating to civil disobedience and current
events.

"I think that academia has an obligation to teach about citizenship and this
is a perfect example of putting words into action," Maggiore said.

The Oakland Education Association, while opposed to the walkouts, was
asking public school officials to be lenient with high school students who
participate.

"We're opposed to the walkouts because we're concerned about the
students' safety and they're also supposed to take exit exams," said Sheila
Quintana, president of the teacher's union. "We respect the students'
rights to speak out, so we're asking the school board to be lenient with
them regarding punishment for walking out."
