March 25 2003 The Fedayeen have emerged as a new and unexpected threat to United States forces. The Fedayeen is a militia commanded by Saddam Hussein's son Uday. Its members are recruited from Iraq's intelligence agencies and its Republican Guard. There are an estimated 60,000 members and as many as 1000 in southern Iraq opposing US forces. The Fedayeen is one of several security agencies and intelligence services in Iraq. Its function is to ensure the survival of Saddam's government against internal and external threats. US officials are well aware of the Fedayeen and thought members of it might be confronted in Baghdad or in some southern cities. But they did not expect them to be so aggressive. The Fedayeen is equipped with four-wheel-drive vehicles, trucks, machine- guns, rocket-propelled grenades and small arms. Members of the militia do not wear uniforms but are dressed in civilian clothes, US officials said. They may not be the only irregular forces operating in the south. Some of the other fighters who have ambushed US troops may include hard-core Baath Party officials and members of Iraq's intelligence organisation. Saddam has set up multiple security organisations to ensure that his survival does not depend on a single agency and to establish a system in which the organisations watch each other. The most dedicated Fedayeen members are organised in the "Golden Company", described as a group of militants prepared to fight to the death.
