from L Moss Sharman Using kids to make big bucks By Kim Bradley 5/28/03 "Thomas Reedy and his case has spurred a massive increase in the amount of for-profit kiddie porn on the Internet and that has led to an increase in the number of kids being abused. "It's reprehensible, but it's even more reprehensible if you're only doing it for the money," said John Carr, director of the British Internet Watch Foundation in the United Kingdom....While most online child porn is free or traded, highly publicized cases like the Reedys are creating an increase in pay-per-view sites owned by people in it for money, Carr said, adding his group finds 80 to 85 new pay Web sites each month. "The fact they (the Reedys) made $1.4 million in one month was a siren call to the mafia," said Carr. "It is undeniably true that a couple of years ago there was no cash trading hands for it at all." And that has led to the abuse of more kids, said Det.-Sgt. Paul Gillespie of the Toronto Police child exploitation unit. "They are facilitating the abuse of thousands of children for money." The Russian mafia, and organized crime groups from countries where child porn isn't seen as a serious offence, are the biggest suppliers of for-profit kiddie porn.
