U.S. military commanders have ordered a halt to local elections and self-rule in provincial cities and towns across Iraq, choosing instead to install their own handpicked mayors and administrators, many of whom are former Iraqi military leaders.
Isn't it odd that the United States of America, the country that insists on Democracy, the country that insists on free and open elections, the country that insists on freedom of speech, the right to peaceful dissent, the right to bear arms--that country (remember it?)--is reneging on all of those rights for the people of Iraq. Iraq has now decided that we are just another enemy and a hyporitical one to boot. It is sadder than you think. MacArthur could have handled Iraq with one hand tied behind his back. The same goes for those in the Roosevelt/Truman administrations. Further, anyone who thinks that Condalizza Rice (sp?) can stand in for Ralph Bunch in the Palestinian/Israeli situation doesn't understand much about diplomacy. It was not the race that counted. It was the fact that Bunch was a great diplomat. Oh well!
