Fifth suspicious fire ignites at home

STAMFORD -- Police and firefighters responded to a vacant Woodmere Road home early Monday for the fifth time in five weeks to extinguish a suspicious car fire.

Police also discovered anti-Semitic graffiti sprayed on the outside of the house.

The residence and vehicle are owned by Constance Krehbiel, 58, a lawyer who lives next door at 116 Woodmere Road. She was charged with second-degree arson in a July 19 blaze -- the second one reported at the home.

Neighbors saw a 1982 Chrysler New Yorker burning in the driveway of 112 Woodmere Road just after midnight Monday, police said.

"The neighbors put it out by spraying water on it," police Sgt. Russell Gladwin said.

Police and fire officials responded, and a fire chief deemed the blaze suspicious, the sergeant said.

They found obscenities, a racial slur and a swastika written in red paint on the fence and side of the house, Gladwin said. A blackened jar with a hole punched in the lid was discovered sitting in a pile of charred newspapers under the vehicle, he said.

Authorities spoke to Krehbiel, who was home at the time, and she said that she owned the vehicle, Gladwin said. The car was towed, leaving a pile of ashes in the driveway.

The first incident at 112 Woodmere Road was a small fire involving a backyard fence, officials say. On July 19, a small house fire occurred, according to police.

On July 30, the day of the third and largest fire, police got an arrest warrant for Krehbiel and charged her in the second fire. A fourth fire, inside the same Chrysler, was reported to police Aug. 13.

Yesterday, police said they had not charged Krehbiel with the fence fire, the July 30 house fire or the two suspicious car fires.

"We're investigating the other four fires, and we are not just going to jump to the conclusion that it's the same person responsible," said Lt. John Forlivio, head of the detective bureau's Crimes Against Persons unit.

Forlivio said the vehicle was in the same location both times. The first fire was in a rear passenger compartment and the second fire was on the vehicle's exterior, he said.

The lieutenant said there were problems with the previous tenants in the house, and they were evicted. He would not say whether they are suspects in any of the crimes.

Krehbiel appeared yesterday in state Superior Court in Stamford with her attorney Michael Sherman, but her court date was continued until tomorrow.

Sherman, who confirmed that his client is Jewish, said she noticed the fire damage to the vehicle Aug. 13 and reported it to police.

"We were not sure whether it was old or new," he said.

Sherman heard an incident involving the vehicle occurred again Monday, but as of yesterday afternoon, he didn't know about the anti-Semitic writing.

After the July 30 arrest, Sherman said Krehbiel is not guilty. At her first court appearance, the case was transferred to Part A for more serious crimes and no plea was entered.
