Giant crack in Arctic ice blamed on global warming
The mother of all breakups on an ancient northern ice shelf

Tuesday, September 23, 2003

The Ward Hunt Ice Shelf -- the largest such formation in the Arctic and quite literally the mother of all icebergs in Canada's extreme North -- has split in half and started breaking into bits after 3,000 years.

<snip>

Scientists fear the coming disintegration of the gargantuan ice block not only provides one of the clearest signs yet of the effects of climate change -- but also raises the spectre of giant icebergs floating away to disrupt Arctic shipping and oil drilling.

"The ice shelf has entered a period of accelerated breakup, resulting in the complete drainage and loss of an epishelf lake ecosystem," says a paper to be published by Geophysical Research Letters. "Recent fracturing on the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf may not only lead to additional shrinkage of the largest Arctic ice shelf, but is also a precursor to ice island production, which is of concern for ship operations and drilling platforms in the Arctic Ocean."
