Pat Robertson, First Lady of Maryland Call for Physical Harm to Others
Oct. 10, 2003

Pat Robertson wants the State Department blown up; First Lady of Maryland wants Britney Spears shot. What is it about Republicans and violence?

Two interesting stories cropped up today.

First, Pat Robertson, the fundamentalist Christian founder of the 700 Club and former Republican presidential candidate, endorsed the idea of a nuclear device being planted in the U.S. State Department, presumably blowing up, killing thousands and leveling Foggy Bottom.

Mr. Robertson made the suggestion when he was interviewing the author of a new anti-State Department book. Robertson, who has been demonizing the Department of State on his television show for quite some time, wrongly attributed the nuclear device "solution" to the author, who never stated in his book that he would like to see the State Department blown up.

In other news, the wife of Maryland Republican Governor Robert Ehrlich, Kendel Ehrlich, stated during a forum on domestic violence that she would personally shoot Britney Spears.

In both cases, prominent Republican figures, instead of simply debating the issues and letting people decide issues on the merit of their arguments, have decided to call for the death of individuals and organizations they oppose.

Whether or not one dislikes the State Department or Britney Spears, reasonable people tend to agree that violence and death are not rational "solutions" to our problems.
