Priest in Nogales missing after misconduct allegation Joseph A. Reaves The Arizona Republic 12/9/03 "A Roman Catholic priest in Nogales being investigated for possible sexual abuse has disappeared. The Rev. Fernando L. Manzo, pastor of San Felipe de Jesus parish, disappeared late last week after being summoned to a closed-door meeting with Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of the Tucson Diocese....The bishop said Manzo promised to let church officials know where he was staying but quickly disappeared." ""Since June 2002, Tucson's diocese has identified 25 priests, one deacon and one religious woman who have been accused of "credible" allegations of sexual misconduct with minors. Many of the allegations date back to the 1960s. Priest Charged With Making Obscene Calls AP 12/10/03 "Daytona Beach, Fla. - A part-time priest was charged with making obscene phone calls to a 70-year-old Ormond Beach woman. Stanley Staniszewski, 60, who worked as a "helper" priest at several Catholic churches in the Diocese of Orlando, said he was unaware of any charges and that the calls were made as "a joke" and that he was "under the influence of medication." The woman, who requested her name not be released, said the Nov. 1 and 2 calls were enough to "scare the heck" out of her. Staniszewski said he still considered himself able to function as a priest. "I have done nothing to her. It was on the phone," Staniszewski said Tuesday. "I apologize if I used bad language." Diocese spokeswoman Carol Brinati said Staniszewski's "faculties" were removed Nov. 11 by Orlando Bishop Norbert Dorsey, and that he was asked to leave the diocese by Nov. 14, but "we can't make him leave." Priest accused of molesting boy after dressing him up like Jesus By Sara Burnett Daily Herald Staff Writer 12/4/03 "A former DuPage County priest already facing sexual abuse charges molested a teenage boy after dressing him like Jesus Christ and taking his picture, an attorney for the victim said Wednesday. The Rev. Fred Lenczycki abused the teen "on a regular and repeated basis" between 1980 and 1983, when Lenczycki was a priest at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Hinsdale, according to the lawsuit filed Wednesday in DuPage County civil court. The eight-count lawsuit also accuses the Diocese of Joliet and Bishop Joseph L. Henry Kissinger gave his approval to the "dirty war" in Argentina in the 1970s in which up to 30,000 people were killed, according to newly declassified US state department documents.Mr Kissinger, who was America's secretary of state, is shown to have urged the Argentinian military regime to act before the US Congress resumed session, and told it that Washington would not cause it "unnecessary difficulties". The revelations are likely to further damage Mr Kissinger's reputation. He has already been implicated in war crimes committed during his term in office, notably in connection with the 1973 Chilean coup. The material, obtained by the Washington-based National Security Archive under the Freedom of Information Act, consists of two memorandums of conversations that took place in October 1976 with the visiting Argentinian foreign minister, Admiral César Augusto Guzzetti. At the time the US Congress, concerned about allegations of widespread human rights abuses, was poised to approve sanctions against the military regime. According to a verbatim transcript of a meeting on October 7 1976, Mr Kissinger reassured the foreign minister that he had US backing in whatever he did. "Look, our basic attitude is that we would like you to succeed," Mr Kissinger is reported as saying. "I have an old-fashioned view that friends ought to be supported. What is not understood in the United States is that you have a civil war. We read about human rights problems, but not the context. "The quicker you succeed the better ... The human rights problem is a growing one ... We want a stable situation. We won't cause you unnecessary difficulties. If you can finish before Congress gets back, the better. Whatever freedoms you could restore would help."
