I'm not into health food, not a vegetarian, but I am emphatically in favor of working class people being able to buy decent fresh produce and decent fresh fish and meat. As a resident of the lower east side (for over forty years) it has long been clear that the poorer the neighborhood the worse the selection of food - and by no means is it at lower prices. When Balducci's was alive and well (I mourn its loss) I would often stop there for vegetables. My old friend Norma Becker would exclaim in outrage "How can a radical shop at Balducci's!!" - the answer was very simple. In season their asparagus was the same price as that of a super market and much better quality. It is a scandal that the poor pay as much or more for less. And some scandal as well that not many of the poor demand what they are entitled to - decent fresh produce, meat, fish.
