This article has graphic descriptions of abuse. Here's a summary of the research on Burgus v. Braun et al that was presented by Lynn Crook at the 2002 International Society for the Study of Dissociation conference last year in Baltimore....In 1993 the Burgus family filed a malpractice lawsuit against Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, Dr. Elva Poznanski, the boys'' psychiatrist, and Dr. Bennett Braun, Pat's psychiatrist...Before her hospitalization at Rush in 1983, Pat spent most days in bed in with the curtains drawn, unable to care for herself. She threatened to kill herself and others. Her husband came home for lunch to make sure the boys were fed. She became convinced that the doctor who did her tubal ligation had implanted a fetus during the surgery. She approached mothers of infant daughters, asking them if they would trade their daughter for her infant son, Mikey. Pat entered Rush diagnosed with multiple personality disorder and borderline personality disorder. Upon admission Pat was agitated and incoherent. During her first month on the unit and before she was placed on meds, Pat told staff "I'm switching [personalities] out of control today. I'm doing so much switching today I can't believe it." Pat testified that the rapid switching decreased over time as her medications were increased....Other patients said they recognized her from her participation in cult-related criminal activities. At the time of her release from Rush in 1987 Pat was more stable and integrated. Did Pat's psychiatrist implant false memories as Pat has claimed? On January 17, 1997, a defense attorney asked Pat about the source of her memories. Pat repeatedly conceded that she had originated all the memories herself. Her psychiatrist did not implant any memories. He had simply passed on to her what the other patients had reported." The full article is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psnews/message/1199

Candidate accused by former patient by Thomas R. O'Donnell - Des Moines Register - 10/28/98 - "A former Iowan who won a $10.6 million settlement from a Chicago hospital and two psychiatrists said the diagnosis of multiple personalities and repressed memories of satanic cults that led to her lawsuit originated with a West Des Moines clinical social worker. But the social worker, Ann-Marie Baughman, now a Polk County legislative candidate, said that when she started counseling Patricia Burgus in 1982, Burgus was a troubled woman who was threatening to kill herself and others. Burgus...also was displaying behavior that Baughman could not understand. "It was the physical changes more than just the verbal expressions of what she was telling me" that led Baughman to conclude she was seeing multiple personalities. The "muscles in her face would all relax . . . and she would just look different. It was just the eeriest thing....But suggestions that Braun somehow planted the horrific memories in Burgus' head are wrong, Baughman said, because they started surfacing during her sessions with Burgus in Des Moines....In the settlement, reached last fall after six years of litigation, neither the hospital nor the psychiatrists, Braun and Elva Poznanski, admitted fault. Braun has said his insurance company settled over his objections."

http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/p991201a.html "Recovered Memory Lawsuit Sparks Litigation" by Michael Jonathan Grinfeld. Psychiatric Times Dec. 1999 Vol. XVI Issue 12, "...Braun has decided to fight back. In June, a 22-page complaint filed on his behalf... claimed that Braun's defense lawyers, the insurance companies and their claims managers settled the Burgus litigation without his consent, even though it was "totally defensible as to Dr. Braun." This is in reference to the "October 1997 settlement totaling $10.75 million...lawsuit...brought against ... (Braun) by a former patient who later retracted memories of recovered abuse." Attorney Kopka said "The reason it did settle was because there was a substantial body of evidence which continued to grow... which would have resulted in a very severe verdict against Dr. Braun, probably exceeding his policy limits."

"Capturing the Friedmans": Examining the Myths Behind the Movie "The assertion of suggestive therapy practices is contradicted by a statement by the two main clinicians who worked with the victims in the Friedman case. Dr. Sandra Kaplan and Dr. David Pelcovitz of NorthShore University Hospital in Long Island, both of whom are well-known experts in the field of psychological trauma, provided group therapy for the Friedmans' victims. Drs. Kaplan and Pelcovitz emphasize that hypnosis was never used in the treatment of these children and that no therapy was offered until after all forensic evidence was gathered by the police (Pelcovitz, personal communication with Dr. Joyanna Silberg, January 11, 2004)." http://www.leadershipcouncil.org/Media/CTF/Myths/myths.html

describes abuse - Organ traffickers 'threaten' nuns - "Four Catholic nuns say they have received death threats after exposing an organ trafficking network allegedly operating in northern Mozambique. The traffickers are said to target the sex organs of children, which are sold to make magic charms. The nuns from the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate order say they have gathered evidence of the trade. They say they have spoken to victims who managed to escape and photos of dead children with missing organs. 'Orphans targeted'  Ritual murders have been reported in many African countries, as some witchdoctors say using human organs in magic charms makes them more powerful. These are believed by some to bring financial or sexual success to those who use them."  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3483581.stm

fwd from L Moss Sharman 'I try to avoid leaving the house' The mysterious murders of hundreds of young maquiladora women are subsiding, Paul Knox reports from Ciudad Juarez. But a star-studded protest march to mark Valentine's Day highlights the public's fear that justice has yet to be done By PAUL KNOX 2/14/04 "There are at least half a dozen theories about motives for the killings. There is talk of "narco-satanic" cults, of killing as an organized-crime initiation rite, of pornographic film sessions, of sex orgies orchestrated by prominent drug traffickers, of gang rapes by joyriding rich kids, of protection by powerful local figures." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPStory/LAC/20040214/MEXI14/TPFocus/

This case describes abuse. State of Connecticut V. Stephen Spiegelmann (AC 22726) Flynn, Bishop and McLachlan, Js.   "The defendant argues on appeal that the trial court acted improperly by (1) allowing certain pornographic materials and testimony regarding such materials to be entered into evidence although the victim had not specifically identified them, (2) admitting prejudicial hearsay under the constancy of accusation doctrine, thereby depriving the defendant of a fair trial, and finally (3) permitting prosecutorial misconduct during cross-examination of the defendant and during closing argu-ment, thereby depriving him of a fair trial. We are not persuaded and therefore affirm the judgment of the trial court." http://www.jud.state.ct.us/external/supapp/Cases/AROap/AP81/81ap151.pdf
