-Caveat Lector-
There are always degrees by which people adhere to certain cults. For
instance, the great majority of Freemasons believe their fraternity compatible
with their Christian faith, and are little aware of the broader realities of the
organization.
So it is with Wiccans. Essentially, they are followers of the occult
tradition who chose to dissociate themselves from the the darker aspects for
which it has been criticized. Specifically, they deny worshipping Lucifer,
and instead claim merely be be nature worshippers.
What they fail to recognize however, is that the pagan cult which they
follow, the same as that of the Ancient Mysteries, is the same pagan cult at the
origin of occult worship. This is the worship of a dying-god and goddess,
who personify the "lifeforces" of nature.
These gods were also recognized as one and the same androgynous deity, and
identified with the planet Venus. The other name for Venus is
Lucifer. Every year, around Easter, this god was believed to descend to
the Underworld, and therefore became identified with that region. That is
how we get our modern notions of the devil.
This is also how he became the chief figure of black magic. His
primary symbol was the Sun, whose darker aspect was known as Saturn. The
worship of Saturn, or Moloch, among the Jews is mentioned in the Bible.
According to ancient beliefs, there is also a god for evil. And so,
to avoid his malice, or direct it against one's enemies, it is necessary to
appease him, by making horrible offerings. To Moloch, the Jews were said
to sacrifice their own children. These rites were also orgiastic,
and performed in drunkeness, with loud music to drown out the cries of the
child.
From these early rites were descended what later came to be known as the
Ancient Mysteries. When the Jews were taken into Captivity in Babylon,
those who refused to repent for their paganism, instead assimilated it into
their own interpretation of Judaism, now known as Kabbalah.
In Babylon, this early Jewish mysticism seems to have influenced the cult
of the so-called Magi of Persia, who were known to worship Mithras, unless the
two groups were merely one and the same.
Through the influence of these Magi, the mysteries were
transported to Greece, but there in the name of Dionysus. The theology of
these mysteries is known as Orphism, and became the core teachings of
Pythagoras, and later Plato. And from them, to the rest of the Western
world.
