Berg's killer identified by the CIA as Jordanian

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is believed
with "high probability" to have been the masked man who beheaded American
Nicholas Berg in a gruesome video, a CIA official said Thursday.

The CIA assessment, based on a technical analysis of the video, also
identifies the voice on the video clip as believed with "high probability"
to be that of Zarqawi, who has links to Al-Qaida and has been identified by
U.S. officials as being behind some of the deadliest attacks in Iraq.

Zarqawi is also suspected in the killing of Laurence Foley, a U.S. aid
official in Amman, Jordan, in October 2002.

The decapitation of Berg, 26, is chillingly reminiscent of the role that a
senior Al-Qaida official, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, played in the February 2002
decapitation of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Pakistan.
Mohammed is now in U.S. custody.

Also Thursday, e-mails provided by Berg's family suggest the businessman was
being detained by the U.S. military. U.S. government officials have said
Berg was detained by Iraqi police March 24 and was never in the custody of
American forces.

To back its claims that Berg was in U.S. custody, the family showed the
Associated Press an April 1 e-mail from Beth A. Payne, the U.S. consular
officer in Iraq. "I have confirmed that your son, Nick, is being detained by
the U.S. military in Mosul. He is safe. He was picked up approximately one
week ago. We will try to obtain additional information regarding his
detention and a contact person you can communicate with directly," the
e-mail said.

The West Chester, Pa., family has blamed the government for keeping Berg in
custody for too long while anti-American violence escalated in Iraq.

Two Islamic militant groups, Hezbollah and Hamas, issued strongly worded
condemnations Thursday of Berg's beheading. And Saudi Arabia and the United
Arab Emirates became the first Arab governments to criticize the slaying.

Lebanon's Hezbollah and the militant Palestinian group Hamas, both labeled
terrorist organizations by the United States, said the beheading was
appalling and un-Islamic.

In a statement faxed to the Associated Press, Hezbollah called Berg's
killing an "extremely brutal and cruel" act.

"Hezbollah condemns this grisly act, which has caused great harm to Islam
and to Muslims by this group which falsely claims to belong to the religion
of mercy, compassion and genuine human values," the statement said.

Osama Hamdan, Hamas' representative in Lebanon, denounced both Berg's
killers and President Bush.

"I condemn this brutal act and sympathize with the family of the slain
American man, who I consider a victim of the wrong U.S. policies in the
region," Hamdan said. "U.S. President George Bush and [Berg's] killers are
equally responsible."

Both groups also condemned the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States, and
Hezbollah has denounced a few other major terrorist attacks that targeted
civilians, but the language they used Thursday was unusually tough.

News of the videotape broke too late for Wednesday newspaper editions in the
Middle East. But on Thursday, the papers spoke out against the killing in
columns and editorials.

"We have to be ashamed as Arabs and cover our eyes," wrote Saleh Qalab, a
columnist in the newspaper al-Ra'i. "He who does not yet realize how much
those organizations have harmed Islam and its civilized message must look
again at those shameful and hideous pictures."

The English-language Jordan Times condemned the killing in an editorial,
calling it "a horrific act of the greatest magnitude."

Dubai's English daily, Gulf News, called it "a truly barbaric act that
served no cause except the brutish bloodlust of his executioners." The paper
said that although there was "justifiable anger" over the U.S. treatment of
Iraqi prisoners, "one brutality does not forgive another."

Saudi Arabia's popular Al-Watan said in an editorial that the killing "was
nothing but an offense to the image of Muslims and their behavior. The
perpetrator could hardly belong to our nation."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
