Re: Pete Seeger: Two Tributes from Portside Readers

Interesting. I saw Pete in concert at Spoleto two years
ago. I never sat down the entire concert. I stood and
the back of the auditorium and "boogied." It's the only
concert I've eVER been to that the musician got a
standing ovation by just walking onto the stage. It was
fabulous. He started with The Midnight Special and it
only got better after that. I LOVE his music.
Hootenannies were how I spent much of my highschool
Friday nights. We'd sing the Peter Paul and Mary,
Seeger, ets songs all night. Thanks for the trip down
memory lane.

Re: Pete Seeger: Two Tributes from Portside Readers

I congratulate you for publishing the two tributes to
Pete Seeger, whom I admire greatly as a person,
particularly the one from Bill Mandel, whom I know.

However, I must take issue with Jack Radey's piece in
its condemnation of Bob Dylan's "apostasy." This is
particularly curious because Mr. Radey praises Seeger
for making "pure rock and roll" as well as blues (folk)
music. Why then does Mr. Radey criticize Dylan for
making rock and roll? The party line seems to be that
Dylan abandoned "message music" after his first three
albums. This despite the fact that he wrote and recorded
"It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)," one of the most
powerful, profound and all-encompassing protest songs
ever written, at a time when he had supposedly
"abandoned protest." He has also written the following
(unfortunately still very relevant) lines:

"Democracy don't rule the world
You better get that through you head
This world is ruled by violence
But I guess that's better left unsaid."

These lines were not recorded in 1963 (or 2003), but in
1983, for the song Union Sundown, which appeared on the
album Infidels. On the other hand, there is much on that
album with which I strongly disagree. As I've pointed
out in my essay "Bob Dylan's Political World"
Bob's politics have never been simple and they can't be
easily defined. But he has always protested, and still
protests, what he has called, in a recent album title, a
"World Gone Wrong." He is a national treasure, one whose
immense achievement (as both a studio and a live
performer) can hardly be grasped, let alone measured,
and the truth is not served by false and invidious
comparisons between him and another national treasure
like Pete Seeger.

Re: Pete Seeger , Symbol of Justice at 85

I didn't see this until after I sent out my morning's
message which, serendipitously provides an intro to this
fine piece. I have a serious and personal critique of
it, however. It doesn't adequately deal with the impact
Pete has had on the many artists, producers and mass
audiences whose understanding and standards of music
were greatly influenced by him, or see his force beyond
the progressive movement. Please read this with that in
mind and you begin to have a sense of his power and
effect.

For what it's worth, my entire 'career' in music would
likely not have existed without his direct influence and
support. Pete transmitted the humanity and beauty of all
human beings, providing the basis for a great tolerance
and a yearning for a world very different than the one
provided Some became actively 'political,' many more
just loved the music or played the banjo, but few have
not been affected by what he brought us - without
demands..

That is his genius.
