More Resistance Operations Rage Inside Iraq; Chopper Down In Najaf
May 26, 2004
Translated And/Or Compiled By Muhammad Abu Nasr, Free Arab Voice

Iraqi eyewitnesses reported on Tuesday afternoon that Iraqi Resistance
fighters fired a number of rockets from a residential apartment at a puppet
police station in downtown Baghdad, causing a huge explosion and wounding
two US aggressor soldiers.

Hasan Jum'ah, an Iraqi puppet "security officer" said that the Iraqi
Resistance rockets missed the puppet police station, but hit another
building and a car park, wounding two American aggressor troops who were on
the roof of the building.

The American Associated Press (AP) reported that US invader troops sealed
off Sa'dun Street where the attack took place, a prominent street where a
statue of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein once stood. US helicopters prowled
the skies above the site of the attack, as other aircraft landed to evacuate
the wounded troops to hospital.

US Helicopter Crashes Near An-Najaf

Al-'Arabiyah satellite TV station reported eyewitnesses as saying that an
American helicopter crashed in the Bahr an-Najaf area near Maqam Zayn al-
'Abidin. According to the witnesses, two US helicopters came and hovered
over the downed craft and fired at anything in range of their guns that
moved towards the crash site. Al-'Arabiyah made no mention of whether the
helicopter crashed due to Resistance gunfire or for some other reason.

Iraqi Resistance Blast Shakes Hotel Frequented By Foreigners In Baghdad

Eyewitnesses reported that an explosion rocked central Baghdad, in what
appeared to be the detonation of an explosives-laden car on Tuesday morning.
The blast occurred outside the al-Karmah Hotel, a place frequented by
foreigners arriving under the aegis of the US occupation.

Mike Murray, a US military propaganda officer, reported that the blast
injured five people, one of them in serious condition.

Iraqi puppet police sources speculated that the target of the blast might
have been the Australian embassy, which is some 100 meters from the stricken
hotel.

Resistance Attack Badly Injures Puppet Police Commander In Al-Khalis

Iraqi Resistance forces on Tuesday attacked and severely wounded Brigadier
General 'Ali Husayn 'Ali, chief of the puppet police force in al-Khalis,
80km northeast of Baghdad. The police commander's driver was killed and two
other persons - the commander's son and one of his aides - riding in the
puppet officer's car were also injured in the Resistance attack.

Malik Salman, an aide to the puppet police chief in al-Khalis told Agence
France Presse (AFP) that "An assassination attempt was made on Brigadier
General 'Ali Husayn 'Ali when he was on his way to his headquarters where he
worked in al-Khalis."

Salman, who was wounded in the attack, said that Resistance fighters driving
two cars assaulted general's car and opened fire and then threw a hand
grenade into the vehicle, wounding the general severely in the jaw and neck,
and killing his driver 'Umar Kahlan, as well as wounding his son 'Ali.
Salman said that the attackers left the scene apparently unscathed, despite
Salman's firing shots at their cars.

Salman said that General 'Ali was at the time in surgery in Ba'qubah General
Hospital in an attempt to treat the severe injuries he sustained when the
hand grenade exploded.

Turkoman Politician Murdered In Kirkuk Late Monday Night

The Iraqi puppet police announced on Tuesday that a prominent Turkoman
politician in Kirkuk was assassinated late on Monday night as he was leaving
his office in the city. The US-appointed puppet police said that attackers
opened fire from a passing car on Ahmad Najm ad-Din, a leader of the Party
of the Turkomani Union as he left the PTU offices.

Colonel Ahmad Salamarz of the puppet police told Reuters that "unknown
persons" fired Kalashnikov assault rifles at Najm ad-Din as he left his
place of work.

It is estimated that there are as many as one million Turkish speaking
Turkomans living in Iraq, most of them in the north of the country. Kirkuk
has been the scene of ethnic violence since the American invasion as
US-backed Kurdish chauvinist parties seek to drive the Arab and Turkoman
population out of the northern part of Iraq, recognized by the Americans,
largely, as a Kurdish puppet region under US domination.

Director Of Board Of Awqaf In Ar-Ramadi Seriously Wounded In Attack

Dr. Muhammad Sulayman, Director of the Board of Muslim Pious Endowments
(awqaf) in ar-Ramadi was wounded seriously when armed personas attacked him
in the center of the city. Eyewitnesses told the Qatari News Agency (Qana)
that the Iraqi official was wounded and two of his companions were killed
and another injured when the armed person opened fire on the car in which
they were riding.

Five Iraqis Died In Fighting In Al-Kufah As US Continues Its Assault

Five Iraqis were killed and 18 wounded in overnight fighting in nearby
al-Kufah, after 32 people died in clashes there early Sunday, 20 of them in
a US rampage through a mosque in the town. Muhammad Husayn, the official in
charge of Emergency cases in al-Furat al-Awsat Hospital in al-Kufah said
that three bodies and 14 wounded people were brought into the hospital over
night. Meanwhile, As'ad 'Abd al-Kazim, head of Emergencies in al-Hakim
Hospital in an-Najaf, said that two bodies, and four wounded persons were
brought to his facility during the night from al-Kufah.
