THE FALSE REAGAN vs. BUSH ANALOGY

During the past week of Ronald Reagan funeral coverage, several TV news channels, such as Fox News, have attempted to draw an analogy between Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush even to the extent of calling them “soulmates”. In case the fallacy of this analogy is not obvious, here are a few examples to help see through this media deception:

USE OF MILITARY

Ronald Reagan is largely credited with winning the Cold War against the Soviet Union, America’s most powerful potential adversary, without ever firing a shot.

G.W. Bush decided to invade Iraq because of the threat of its weapons of mass destruction, a pretense proven to be false by U.N. weapons inspectors in their testimony to the U.N. Security Council PRIOR to the invasion.

BUDGET

Contrary to what some political pundits claim, Ronald Reagan made many attempts to reduce budget deficits by proposing major spending cuts, requesting a balanced budget amendment from Congress, requesting a line item veto power from Congress and establishing the Grace Commission that consisted of experts from the private sector to make budget recommendations. His efforts were stymied primarily by the Democrat controlled House, particularly the Appropriations Committee which has ultimate responsibility for establishing the budget.

G.W. Bush as leader of the Republican Party that controlled both the House and Senate took no substantive action as the Republican controlled Congress ran up 500 billion dollar annual budget deficits, the highest in American history by far.

ECONOMY

Upon taking office in 1981, Ronald Reagan inherited 13%+ inflation, 19%+ mortgage rates and 7%+ unemployment, the highest “misery index” in American history. Upon leaving office in 1989 these numbers had been remarkably cut in half and America was in a period of economic growth and prosperity.

Upon taking office in 2001, G.W. Bush inherited a booming economy fueled in part by reduced federal spending of the previous fiscally conservative, Republican led Congress. The 4 years of his presidency is now a period renowned for American job loss, overseas outsourcing of American business, significant salary reductions for American workers and widespread turnover of jobs to foreign workers, further encouraged by the Bush proposal of amnesty for roughly 11 million illegal immigrants.

DOMESTIC DEFENSE

During 8 years of the Reagan administration no major domestic attacks against the U.S. occurred on American soil.

After 8 months of the Bush administration 2600+ people lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the WTC and Pentagon even though so much foreknowledge existed among the FBI, CIA and NSA agencies that 9-11 could have likely been prevented had FBI counter terrorism headquarters not thwarted investigations in San Diego, Chicago, Phoenix and Minneapolis. In response to the attacks, the Bush administration:

·         Promoted and substantially raised salaries for two employees in FBI counter terrorism headquarters who appear to have thwarted FBI field office investigations San Diego, Chicago, Minneapolis and Phoenix, any of which could have possibly prevented 9/11 if allowed to proceed as normal;

·         Never identified and prosecuted individuals who profited from 9/11 by shorting the stocks of United and American airlines and WTC tenants, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley Dean Whitter 10-50 times more than normal during the three business days before the attacks;

·         Took numerous steps to stymie various 9-11 investigations including withholding of documents, and establishing terms to ensure that the “independent” was not actually independent;

FOREIGN POLICY

Ronald Reagan was reasonably well respected in much of the world even by potential adversaries such as Michail Gorbachev, the leader of the Soviet Union.

George W. Bush and his American foreign policy is so disliked throughout much of the world that American athletes were told not to wave American flags at the 2004 Olympics for fear of inciting additional hatred.

TAXES

When Ronald Reagan took office in 1981 the second plank of the Communist Manifesto, written by Karl Marx, had been successfully implemented in America. The graduated income tax rate on income over $100,000 was 88%. Reagan proposed, and Congress passed, a reduction of income tax rates to where the maximum rate was 33%. Some political pundits falsely portrayed this legislation as “a tax cut for the rich”.

When George W. Bush took office in 2001, the Reagan, both George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton had proposed tax and received Congressional approval for income tax rate increases. The maximum income tax rate was increased to 38% under Bush and 39.6% under Clinton. The 2003 tax cut proposed by George W. Bush and approved by Congress set the maximum tax rate at 35% an actual increase over the tax rates implemented under Reagan.

INDIVIDUAL AMERICAN FREEDOM

Under Ronald Reagan individual freedom of American citizens remained relatively stable with little overall change.

G. W. Bush has presided over the greatest power grab of individual freedom from the American people since Franklin Roosevelt. Under the guise of the Bush administration war on terrorism, American citizens are being held indefinitely without the due process afforded to them by the U.S. Constitution. In addition, the Bush administration has made repeated attempts to decimate many sections of the Bill of Rights through Congressional legislation. One example is the Patriot Act that allows:

  • Secret searches to be conducted without obtaining proper warrants (Sec. 213);
  • Secret acquisition of business records without court orders (Sec. 215);
  • Personal communications information to be obtained without probable cause of a crime (Sec. 216);
  • Foreign intelligence to be gathered on American citizens for almost any non erroneous purpose (Sec. 218);
  • Search warrants from one district to apply to another without identifying the person or property (Sec 219);
  • Court orders to be served on a communication company without even identifying the company (Sec. 220);

Worse yet, Section 802 of the act defines, as a terrorist, any political activist who “appears to be intended … to use coercion to influence government policy”. The Bush administration and Republican Congressional leadership rammed this act through Congress by rewriting House Judiciary Committee legislation overnight, suspending normal House rules, demanding a vote on the bill before members had a chance to read the legislation and pressuring Congress by questioning the patriotism of any members who opposed the measure.

CONCLUSION

Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush have little in common other than the fact that they ran as Republicans. The intent of the above points is not to glorify the Reagan administration, since it clearly had its fair share of corruption, but for us to consider how far down the path of destruction we have gone in the last four years under George W. Bush.
