PUNKED BY FALSE OPS
JON RAPPOPORT www.nomorefakenews.com

JUNE 24, 2004.

It's a fairly simple point, really, when you think about it.

A story is presented to us by the media. Oh, let's make one up and say it goes this way: "Al Qaeda cell functioning in Colombia."

Where did this story originate? It was basically a press release all dressed up by officials in the US and Colombian governments.

The wire services picked it up. The networks (CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and so on) gave it to us.

Then, on the usual magazine and talk shows, we heard it repeated and discussed. "What are the implications of this revelation?"

"Are al Qaeda involved in drug trafficking?"

All this is chewed on until the next day or week, when the original story sinks like a stone.

The general effect is to make us think that al Qaeda are everywhere---and must be defeated.

But suppose this original press release really started somewhere in the bowels of the Israeli Mossad. It was cooked up there. Let's say that. And let's say the Mossad passed it on to the CIA and other intelligence agencies. And then, finally, it became an official press release of the US and Colombian governments.

Let's say the story is false.

Let's say there are, in fact, a few suspicious characters moving around in Bogota, and they do have excellent fake Saudi passports, or fake passports from Iran or Syria. But they are really plants. These few guys are Israeli intelligence people who can speak several Middle East languages.

And suppose the big TV networks and the wire services and the big papers are eventually told, by reliable sources, that the whole deal is a hoax, that the al Qaeda people in Colombia are Israelis.

At this point, these media outlets have several choices. They can print flaming retractions of their original pieces and rail and rant and blow this caper sky-high. They can ignore the new revelations and pretend they were right in the first place. They can print a soft small story that says there may be some mistake. They can say the al Qaeda people in Colombia were misidentified to begin with---it was just one of those errors that occurs from time to time...

The media outlets were punked to begin with. Are they going to say, "WE WERE PUNKED?"

Not usually.

You see, the media want to preserve their reputations. Well, sure.

It's not a great idea to put the same oomph in the retraction that they put into the original lie.

Remember the whole bogus tale that was floated just before Persian Gulf War One? About the Iraqi soldiers in the Kuwaiti hospital who spilled babies out of incubators and let them die on the cold floor? The story that provided the last bit of push needed to give Bush One the support he needed to invade Iraq?

The girl who tearfully and skillfully testified before what looked like a US Congressional hearing, but wasn't, who relayed what she saw in that hospital, turned out to be the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador. At the time she testified, she was not IDed in that fashion, of course.

The whole deal was a lie.

And eventually the lie was exposed.

Did the same media who covered that girl's testimony make a major retraction? No.

There was some media exposure about the lie, but it was relatively small exposure.

In truth, major media are punked all the time, and if they printed their retractions in flaming letters in every case, they would look like the boy who cried wolf. They would crash and burn.

So they don't do retractions like they do lies.

AND THEREFORE THE PUBLIC NEVER SEES HOW MANY LIES AND COVER STORIES AND INTELLIGNECE OPS ARE FLOATED IN THE PRESS---AND THEREFORE THE PUBLIC BELIEVES THAT 99% OF WHAT THE PRESS REPORTS AS SIMPLE FACT IS FACT...

AND THEREFORE THE PUBLIC BELIEVES THAT THE EXPOSURE OF FALSE OPS IS REALLY ALL JUST: CONSPIRACY THEORY.

Wacko stuff.

Paranoid delusion.

"Hey, did you hear this guy Joe at work? He says the CIA used to have a mind-control program and they ran a whorehouse in San Francisco and some agent spied through a peephole while the hookers gave their johns drinks spiked with LSD..."

"Joe needs to get out more. He needs to get laid. The dude has serious issues. He should see a shrink. I feel sorry for his wife."

The CIA agent who spied through the peephole was George White.

At all costs, the public must be protected from the idea that there are powerful people running around out there who have THE PRIMARY INTENT TO DECEIVE.

Because if that (correct) idea worms its way into the culture, the balloon will go up.

Newsflash: that idea IS worming its way deep into the culture.

I would point out that even the government of Israel and the Mossad are coming under the kind of suspicion that couldn't have existed ten years ago. Every day, a few more people are waking up to the realization that US intelligence agencies have, for a long time, been relying on information passed on to them from the Mossad, a group that is better suited than any in the world to discover/invent/ create data about Middle East terrorists.

On a slow day, check Google for recent books and articles that claim to analyze the growth of "the conspiracy culture." Almost uniformly, these tracts peg conspiracists as people who are somehow trying to compensate for their own deeply felt problems.

"He thought the moon was a UFO. His family had urged psychiatric treatment, but he refused."

"This man who constructed the diagrams showing that any bomb set off in a Ryder truck at the curb outside the Murrah building in 1995 couldn't have caused the specific profile of damage incurred by the building? You see, he always wanted to play the violin. His mother made him study accounting. So he started dreaming up these fantasies. He once told his girlfriend he could leave his body at night while he was asleep."

Don't worry; be happy. Choose either the Democrats or the Republicans. Everything else is the result of well-defined mental disorders.

Imagination is the key to life on planet Earth? What? The key to life is going to work every day and keeping your goddamn mouth shut and looking straight ahead. If you find yourself thinking a stray thought, eat a Snickers. Watch CSI. The good guys always win. And remember, the Internet is for gambling and porn. Stick with the Yankees in the fall and Amber Tiffany Heather. It'll all work out. You're gonna look great. I guarantee it.
