Trains, Plans, and Ex-President stop in Eugene

Former President George H.W. Bush visited Eugene on Thursday - for about 25 minutes.
Bush and his entourage - including his wife, Barbara, former British Prime Minister John Major and his wife, Norma - got off a Union Pacific passenger train that stopped about 3:25 p.m. in a dirt lot on Bethel Drive.
They climbed into a convoy of Secret Service SUVs and sped to the Eugene Airport with a Eugene police escort. Barbara Bush waved and smiled at a group of about 15 people outside the American Red Cross building at 862 Bethel Drive.
At the airport, they boarded three planes that took off in quick succession - the last at 3:50 p.m.
According to The Associated Press, the vacationing former president had ridden the train from Nevada and stopped Wednesday in Sacramento, where he met briefly with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and toured a museum.
Eugene was the end of the rail trip and the spot for a quick transportation switch, Eugene police spokeswoman Kerry Delf said.
Crews had been out at the dirt lot for about three days, removing piles of trash and rocks with a tractor, said Jason Hazlett, who lives across the street. "We were wondering what was going on," he said.
Hazlett stood in his living room with a pair of binoculars and watched the Bushes disembark. He said he never expected to see a former president in his neighborhood. "I'm not a supporter, but it was cool to see him," he said.
