DVDs hit the campaign trail hard
As the presidential race enters its final stretch — and with the Republican convention less than a month away — DVD suppliers are turning up the heat on all things political.

The biggest political movie of the year, Michael Moore's Bush-bashing Fahrenheit 9/11, finally has a firm DVD date: Oct. 5.

And there's plenty more political fare on DVD, and the topics range from humorous to scandalous:

Lateline (Aug. 17, Paramount). The disc has Season 1 of Al Franken's spoof of Nightline, which aired on NBC. Paramount is touting a cameo by Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry. "He's the only presidential candidate to ever appear in a sitcom," says Paramount's Martin Blythe. "And he's good."

DC 9/11: Time of Crisis (Sept. 7, Showtime Entertainment). The TV movie centers on the White House's reaction to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Critics called it "a love letter" to President Bush.

TheHunting of the President (Sept. 28, 20th Century Fox). The documentary details the alleged right-wing conspiracy to bring down Bill Clinton.

The Road to the Presidency (Sept. 28, Facets Video). A behind-the-scenes look at the 1992 presidential race. "As this year's election draws closer, there is an incredible interest in not only the candidates, but also in the election process itself," says Facets' Steve Bliss.

Staffers (Nov. 2, Anchor Bay). A 180-minute documentary on the Kerry campaign out on Election Day.

Perhaps the biggest sparks will accompany the documentary Horns and Halos (Oct. 5), about the controversy surrounding the notorious 1999 book about Bush called Fortunate Son.

Author James Hatfield claimed that George W. had been arrested for cocaine possession in the early 1970s, but his well-connected dad had hushed up the bust. The book briefly hit the best-seller lists, but lawyers for the future president threatened a lawsuit. When it was revealed that Hatfield had served five years in prison for attempted murder, St. Martin's Press withdrew the book.

An underground publisher, Soft Skull Press, reissued it, but when Hatfield was found dead in a motel room after an overdose of prescription pills, the whole sordid saga swiftly faded from public consciousness.

Filmmakers Michael Galinsky and Suki Hawley were intrigued by the drama and decided to make a movie about it. Making the film was relatively easy; getting it to the public took nearly a year and a half.

It appeared briefly on the art-house film circuit, but then the Iraq war began. Only now have Galinsky and his partner found a video distributor, Koch Entertainment, which is releasing the film on DVD for Go Kart Films.

"It's kind of nuts," Galinsky says. "Since our movie first hit a year and a half ago, it's real interesting, the changes that have taken place in what people want to see and are willing to see."
