Subject: [AI-Arms-Race] Machine Child

Dear Dr. Gage:

Al Grimes on the AI- list recently referred us to the DARPA web site which
describes your project to "Develop learning-based software technologies
required for robust perception-based autonomy." Mr. V on the IMP- list is
working on related "perception-based" robotics and object recognition
problems. If you have a robot with general object recognition
capabilities, I have no doubt that it can be taught natural language. We
teach natural language to human children by orienting them as to
time/place/person and then giving them normative word strings for various
scenarios.

I would suggest that you build a few thousand humanoid robots which will
endear themselves to their human owners, robots which could cost only a
few hundred dollars each. They would have machine eyes and ears connected
to a standard pc for a brain. They might have only the walking and
arm-moving ability of an inexpensive child's toy with lights flashing for
eyes. The $3 Aibo imitation on my shelf does this plus it wags its tail
and moves its head. Quite "endearing" ....

If you give these robots plus software to a few thousand "parents"
connected by Internet, they can share the teaching load for teaching
Machine Child to speak Standard Everyday English, scenario by scenario.

Who should qualify as the best bets for parenting Machine Child?

Z
