-Caveat Lector- As a noncombat veteran I'll just hazard a guess that as much as dishonesty and deception, not to mention theft, that were prevalent in a peacetime military, I don't see why things would be different during wartime.
There is so much falsification of records to insure promotion that no official military record can be trusted. This can be taken to justify the opinions on either side, but anyone claiming to know the truth about any military document probably stopped thinking a long time ago. Everyone has their own story, and when any two people have the exact same story, one of them is changing his to be nice and avoid disagreement. As a young writer I published a column on dishonesty and hypocrisy in the military and I got a strong negative reaction from some older veterans. Unpleasant truth seems to provoke stronger reaction than untruth. So, both sides are lying, and why not? Isn't that what the American people expect?
