-Caveat Lector- To the editor, Government a Poor safety net. Some congressmen are boasting how government is providing a safety net for displaced workers harmed by trade treaties, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). But extended unemployment benefits and retraining assistance will be ineffective in a dwindling high paying job market. The bad news is that the burden of government regulation and out of control spending has eaten up the productivity gains of American businesses and forced many to relocate abroad. Our high-tech and basic industries, as well as broad sectors of manufacturing, are facing extinction due the high costs of doing business in America. A study by the National Association of Manufacturers released in December of last year (2003) documents that the federal regulatory burden is the single most important factor behind the exodus of jobs from the United States (U.S.). Simply put: Many, if not most , American businessmen who relocate abroad aren't abandoning our nation's free enterprise system. They're fleeing socialism. Government programs to help those injured by other government programs may be an easy sell politically. But such programs merely compound the problem without providing real relief. Where do the extended benefits come from that Congress wants to bestow on the unemployed? Government has wealth of its own except that which it taxes from its people. The additional burden imposed on the productive sector to pay for this government generosity will make it even more difficult for domestic business to compete. How much better not to create the problem in the first place! Let's insist that Congress ratchet down the burden of government at home and quit supporting trade agreements that empower regional regulatory bureaucracies and encourage the relocation of American businesses abroad.
