FTAA: Managed trade, Not Free trade.
The proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)
is not about free trade, but about managed trade.
The FTAA would take what is now a relatively free international
trade arena and turn it into a mass of regulation and regional
governmemnt bureaucracy. For example, the current draft of the
agreement would involve the FTAA extensively with environmental
and labor regulations. The labor related sections mandate
compliance with "internationally recognized labor rights." Such
regulatory power would make the FTAA an international EPA and OSHA
combined into one.
American business is already suffering from domestic over
regulation. The combination of burdensome regulation and taxation at
home, combined with the elimination of import tariff, is forcing U.S.
companies to outsource jobs overseas. The FTAA would greatly aggravate
the situation. By adding new layers of regulation on on already
overburdened
domestic business and offering extra incentives to move operations
overseas
out of the U.S. the FTAA would be devastating to our gross national
product,
balance of trade, and employment figures. COntact your representative and
Senators in Congress immediately to urge defeat of the FTAA or any
intermediate step to the FTAA such as the Central American Free Trade Area
(CAFTA)
