WASHINGTON D.C. -- Monday – US President George Bush’s administration has warned that the work and existence of the Hague Tribunal threatens regional stability in the Balkans.
According to the Washington Times, the US administration is asking tribunal Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte to bring all remaining cases in The Hague to an end as soon as possible. The US government recommends that all war crimes trials that relate to crimes perpetrated in the former Yugoslavia, be transferred to regional courts, or the giving of amnesty to the accused.
“The US believes that the tribunal has become not only an undemocratic institution, but also a direct threat to the development of democracy on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. This change means not only a dramatic change in US politics towards the tribunal, but also, more importantly, a fatal blow to the power and credibility of Carla Del Ponte." the daily comments.
The article quotes Deputy US Secretary for Weapons Control, John Bolton, as saying that there is a great risk that the tribunal will not solve problems in the Balkans, but rather create new animosity which will lead to increased future tensions.
The daily adds that Bolton, as well as other representatives of the US State Department, feel that the Hague Tribunal has degenerated into a politicized institution that has not been able to stay true to its original purpose and mandate.
“Instead of remaining an impartial institution whose goal it is to punish war criminals, the tribunal has become a means for Carla Del Ponte to try and alter the history of the Balkan wars." the daily comments.
