In 1984, Winston Smith lives in London which is part of the country Oceania. The world is divided into three countries that include the entire globe: Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. Oceania, and both of the others, is a totalitarian society led by Big Brother, which censors everyone’s behavior, even their thoughts. Winston is disgusted with his oppressed life and secretly longs to join the fabled Brotherhood, a supposed group of underground rebels intent on overthrowing the government. Winston meets Julia and they secretly fall in love and have an affair, something which is considered a crime. One day, while walking home, Winston encounters O'Brien, an inner party member, who gives Winston his address. Winston had exchanged glances with O'Brien before and had dreams about him giving him the impression that O'Brien was a member of the Brotherhood. Since Julia hated the party as much as Winston did, they went to O'Brien’s house together where they were introduced into the Brotherhood. O'Brien is actually a faithful member of the Inner-Party and this is actually a trap for Winston, a trap that O'Brien has been cleverly setting for seven years. Winston and Julia are sent to the Ministry of Love which is a sort of rehabilitation center for criminals accused of thoughtcrime. There, Winston was separated from Julia, and tortured until his beliefs coincided with those of the Party. Winston denounces everything he believed him, even his love for Julia, and was released back into the public where he wastes his days at the Chestnut Tree drinking gin.

    Overrated

This book, and George Orwell in general, is over rated. Huxley's Brave New World is a far more interesting, and less predictable on the issues of a totalitarian system of government. I also reccomend "Darkness at Noon" for a very accurate look at what it was like to be a member of the Party that was eventually broken down by the system they had served. You do not need to read Orwell's lectures, and long, drawn out treatsies on government. Read good literature.

    Ninteen Eighty-Four

I just have to say that this book is AMAZING! I'm only on the 3rd chapter but I'm already hooked! I had no idea that it was so closely based on the Second World War! I hadn't really done my research on it. But I'm also pretty proud that I figured that out! Shows I do pay attention in History. :D

Does Big Brother control the entire world?

1984 is the best book I've ever read. I've read it multiple times and I keep wondering if the Inner Party controls Eurasia and Eastasia, as well as Oceania? For instance, are their posters of BB all over Eurasia, is their a minipax in Eastasia? If this is true, this is the most brillant plan ever.

    What the book's about

Put simply, 1984 is a satire of Western society and government. Animal Farm was a satire of Soviet 'communism', and 1984 is a satire of the other side in the Cold War. The book has at its base many of the features of modern society, just carried to extremes. For example: 1. One-sided, right-wing corporate news evolves into the Daily Hate 2. How the West supports people like Saddam Hussein and Pol Pot is forgotten as soon as they have out-lived their usefulness (the memory hole at work) 3. Language is controlled - meaningless terms like 'Anti-American' are accepted and commonly used, laws passed to undermine the rights of people and make huge amounts of money for mutlinationals are called 'reforms' and 'liberalisation', here in the UK we have a 'defense' budget which we spend on troops and weapons we use to attack people, and so on. I see the book as a warning of where we will end up if we allow things to carry on as they are.

All totalitarian regimes so far have been inefective mostly because people were quite aware of absurdity which rulling party tried to impose, in other words, they always thougt of better future, of being free, therefore instead of love, trust they felt absolute hate, despect - G. Orwell's provided control of the thoughts in "1984" would be a great solution, it would be totalitarian regime's complete victory, perfection! In addition, the way in which he explains how the control of thoughts will be reached is quite believable - controle over ones mind makink him suffer, thus destroying the world that is outside of his mind, the world where 2+2=4, it is not imposible, because not a single human being has born with a fixed nature, the regime, enviroment has made it, "man's nature is changeable" says Orwell. The book therefore could be regarded as warning about how far would go totalitarian regimes in future! It is not fantasy - the end of history has not come!!!

ok i loved this book but it depressed the hell out of me. because good does not prevail over evil in the world of 1984. its just so demorallising. especially now days when there is so much hate and evil in our world i would like to think that good will overcome it. so upon readings this book dont get too affected by it because in the real world good overcomes evil. like the allies overcame the nazis. and saddam was defeated and talliban was defeated.

The story 1984 at first bored me extremely i. thought of it as stupid and ilrational. That was only the first 34 pages. I was stuned in the insanity of it all while it did remain on the biridge of sanity. O'bryanwhas a man whinston loved for some reason but loathed at the same time. such i felt about 1984 the story what a crule world they lived in. where there was no love happiness or faith. It obviously was the way thing were heading in Orwells time with the russians and the nazis. I had terrible night mare for weeks while and after reading this book not on the life in which winston lived but my life becomming that.

    my opinion..

1984 is an interesting novel. It shows a very different view of how the world could of turned out. It depicts the year 1984 as a slightly (stressing that word) twisted world, under total domination of a few leaders. In Oceania's case, that group is the party. The three main powers are always at war, and who is fighting who changes quite often, at least in the real world. In the history books, text is re-written everytime a change happenes. The previous never took place, never was real, was only something the people thought up. Whatever the party says is what is true; if they hold up four fingers and ask a person "How many?" the person replies "Five." If anyone is suspected of plotting against the government, the thought police take them away. They restore you to the status of a "good" citizen, release you, and then kill you later. Or, they kill you and you never are released back to the public. It all depends on what they wish to do with you. 1984 is a very different perspective on how life could of been. Although it was not my favorite book, I would recommend it as a worthwhile novel.

I have just one thing to say:
    Who is julia, really?
She knows so much about mr. smith, yet in their world you don't have access to stuff like that.
Is she really who she says she is or is she under cover.
