"Imperialism tries to hide its bellicosity and the death, hunger, poverty, exile and destruction it inevitably brings by saying its real aims are the defence of human rights and democracy," the guerrilla Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) said in a statement carried by the German-based DEM news agency. The statement said Western complicity in Turkey's capture of Ocalan and support for a Turkish army campaign against the rebels in mainly Kurdish-populated regions of Turkey and Iraq proved NATO's motives were not humanitarian. "Those who fought for the freedom of the Kosovo people would not support the colonialist war of destruction in Kurdistan. They would not hand over the leader of a people's struggle for freedom to a scheme to kill him," it said. Turkey captured Ocalan in Kenya in February after many western European countries had refused to let him in. He is now the sole inmate of an island jail where he awaits a treason trial and possible death sentence for orchestrating the PKK's 14-year-old armed campaign for Kurdish self rule in southeast Turkey. More than 29,000 people have died in the fighting. NATO member Turkey, where two Turkish nationalist parties surged in recent general elections, says it has all but defeated the PKK militarily. The fighting led to mass migration away from the southeastern countryside. Ankara says there is no discrimination against its 12 million Kurdish citizens and denounces the PKK as criminals and terrorists funded and encouraged by hostile neighbours.
