Echoes of Trauma: The Lifelong Health Costs of Childhood Violence and Abuse
4/18/06 12:00-1:30pm SC-4, The Capitol "Last year, almost one
million American children were the victims of child abuse and neglect. For
some, maltreatment is a fact of daily life, a constant state in which they
live. For too many, that maltreatment will leave an indelible mark on
their developing brains, a condition which must be recognized and addressed if
it is to be overcome. In 1990s, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
and Kaiser Permanente initiated the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study,
which has interviewed over 18,000 adults about their current health
status. The participants were then asked about whether they had
experienced childhood trauma, including being a victim of child abuse or neglect
or living in a household with domestic violence, mental illness, or substance
abuse. The results of that study showed startling correlations between the
incidence of childhood trauma and serious adult health problems such as tobacco
use, substance abuse, obesity, cancer, heart disease and depression as well as
high risk for unintended pregnancies. For example, those adults who
acknowledged having experienced four or more adverse childhood events were
almost 17 times more likely to have attempted suicide." http://www.congressweb.com/t/a/?ZZYPGYJOUXKYXVB Let us please be civil and as always, Caveat Lector. ======================================================================== Archives Available at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ <A HREF="">ctrl</A> ======================================================================== To subscribe to Conspiracy Theory Research List[CTRL] send email: SUBSCRIBE CTRL [to:] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To UNsubscribe to Conspiracy Theory Research List[CTRL] send email: SIGNOFF CTRL [to:] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Om |
