BROWN TURNS SCREW ON BLAIR OVER PM JOB

Chancellor Gordon Brown is turning the screw on British Prime Minister Tony Blair to hand over power, saying he does not want a repeat of Margaret Thatcher's ejection from office at the hands of her Cabinet.

His comments were seen as an implicit threat that Blair could suffer the same fate if he did not keep to his word to allow his successor sufficient time to prepare for the next election.

"Tony said that he is going to be doing it in a stable and orderly way, that means that he is going to be talking not just to me but to senior colleagues about it," Brown told GMTV.

"Remember when Mrs Thatcher left, it was unstable, it was disorderly and it was undignified.

"I think we will prove to the world that we can do these things in an orderly, dignified and sensible and proper way, and do it in a way that is unifying as well as unified."

Thatcher was deposed after her Cabinet refused in 1990, one by one in private meetings, to support her in a second ballot to retain her party's leadership.

Brown's comments came after days of speculation about just when Blair would hand over to the man he now acknowledges as his chosen successor - Brown.

Tensions between the two men reached new heights after Labour's drubbing last week in the local elections and Blair's subsequent Cabinet reshuffle in which squabbling broke out over whose supporters had been promoted.

The Prime Minister tried to quell the unrest at his monthly press conference and at last Monday's meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party, promising to give his successor ample time to bed in.

He also insisted Brown remained his chosen successor. However, he refused to set out a timetable for his departure as some critics in the party have been demanding.

The heated mood was not eased by a poll for The Times showing support for Labour had slumped six points in a month to 30 per cent, with David Cameron's Tories rising four points to enjoy an eight point lead, their biggest for 14 years.

Senior members of the Labour Party tried to halt the damaging leadership feud.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said he believed that an "orderly and smooth transition" was still possible and appealed to those demanding a timetable to bide their time.

Calls for Blair to leave soon have grown following a series of sleaze and mismanagement scandals that culminated in Labour taking a severe beating in local council elections last week. That prompted Blair to make a sweeping cabinet reshuffle.

Blair, who led the Labour Party to an unprecedented third successive election win last year, despite being hurt by anger over the Iraq war, has pledged not to seek a fourth term.

Some commentators interpreted Blair's pledge to allow time for his successor to settle in as abandoning a promise made during last year's election campaign to serve a full term and said it indicated he could stand down mid next year.

Some Labour critics of Blair were satisfied with the prime minister's promise to give his successor time to settle in, but others kept up the pressure on him to go.

"We'll obviously be waiting to see clear signs of a transition taking place, but as of today, I think the mood has changed quite considerably," Labour MP Ian Davidson, a persistent critic of Blair, told BBC radio.
